Contact Group on Piracy off the Coast of Somalia Update

Quarterly Update on piracy The Contact Group on Piracy off the Coast of Somalia was created on January 14, 2009 pursuant to UN Security Council Resolution 1851. This voluntaryad hoc international forum brings together over 80 countries, organizations, and industry groups with a shared interest in combating piracy. Chaired in 2013 by the United States, the Contact Group coordinates political, military, and non-governmental efforts to tackle piracy off the coast of Somalia, ensure that pirates are brought to justice, and support regional states to develop sustainable maritime security capabilities. The European Union will assume the chairmanship in 2014.Recent DevelopmentsOn July 9, the governments of The Bahamas and the United States signed a bilateral Memorandum of Understanding to formalize their joint handling of Somali piracy cases where U.S. forces capture individuals suspected of attacks on Bahamian flagged-ships. This MOU between a major flag state (The Bahamas has the fifth largest merchant fleet in the world) and a major force provider in counter-piracy operations marks a significant step forward in international cooperation. EU Naval Force Helicopter Overflies MV Albedo And FV Naham 3 Guards on Naham 3 are highly alert - two pirate guards pointing their weapons at the EU Naval Force helicopter on reconnaissance flight (Image credit: EU Naval Force)Last week EU Naval Force confirmed that the Malaysian flagged Motor Vessel, MV Albedo, held by armed pirates in an anchorage close to the Somali coast since November 2010, had sunk in rough seas.Since then EU Naval Force warships and a Maritime Patrol Aircraft have conducted sea and air searches in the area to look for survivors.As reported last week, an EU Naval Force Maritime Patrol Aircraft sighted two life boats on a Somali beach approximately 14 miles north of the position of the Albedo. No members of the MV Albedo crew or pirates were sighted in or near the lifeboats.Yesterday, a helicopter from an EU Naval Force warship overflew MV Albedo and the fishing vessel FV Naham 3, which is tied astern of MV Albedo's visible superstructure by ropes. MV Albedo lifeboats sighted on Somali beach

No crew or pirates sighted EU Naval Force affirmed few days ago that the Motor Vessel MV Albedo, held by armed pirates in an anchorage near the Somali coast since November 2010, had sunk.According to EU Naval Force, a warship and Maritime Patrol Aircraft search for survivors.Throughout the aerial search, EU Naval Force Maritime Patrol Aircraft located two life boats on a Somali beach give or take 14 miles north of the position of the Albedo. After being held by Somali pirates for over two and a half years latest image of the MV Albedo (Photo credit: EUNAVFOR)EU Naval Force confirmed on Monday 8th July, that the Malaysian flagged Motor Vessel MV Albedo, held by armed pirates at an anchorage close to the Somali Coast, has sunk in rough seas.According to Gulf News, at least four crew members and seven Somali pirates died when MV Albedo cargo vessel sank on Sunday, July 7. The 15 crew members from MV Albedo remain unaccounted for.MV Albedo has been in pirate hands since it was attacked in the Indian Ocean in November 2010, and was in pirate hands when it sank.An EU Naval Force warship and Maritime Patrol Aircraft have closed the sea area and are continuing to carry out a Search and Rescue operation to search for any survivors.
