The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) collaborated with the Singapore Shipping Association (SSA) to organise the first in a series of dialogue sessions to the shipping community to reinforce the importance of the safety of navigation in the Singapore Strait and Singapore's port waters.

Additional safety and navigational alerts to vessels MPA takes a serious view of any incidents in Singapore waters. Following the recent three collisions resulting in oil spillage, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) is conducting investigations to determine the causes of the collisions and if there were systemic issues that need to be addressed. While awaiting the outcome of these investigations, MPA will implement several measures with immediate effect to minimise future marine incidents.Measures to enhance navigational safetyMPA will conduct briefings to the shipping community to reinforce the importance of the safety of navigation in the Singapore Strait and within our port waters. These briefings, conducted in partnership with the Singapore Shipping Association, will be targeted at shipowners, ship managers, ship charterers and shipping agents, who have direct channels to convey the safety messages to the ship masters and officers. At about 1535hrs on 10 February 2014 (Singapore time), the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore received a report that a collision had occurred between the departing Liberia-flagged containership "Hammonia Thracium" and the Panama-flagged chemical tanker "Zoey" in the Singapore Strait, off Sebarok Island (about 10km south of mainland Singapore).

On 29 January 2014, at about 1830hrs (Singapore Time), the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) received a report that a Hong Kong-flagged chemical tanker, "Lime Galaxy" had collided with the arriving China-flagged containership, "Feihe" at about 2.7 km, south of Jurong Island. Prior to the incident, MPA's Port Operations Control Centre attempted to alert the two vessels of their converging courses.

At about 0410hrs on 30 January 2014 (Singapore time), the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) received a report that a Panama-flagged containership, "NYK Themis", had collided into a barge "AZ Fuzhou" , at East Keppel Fairway at about 4 km south of Marina South.

Following the oil spillage from two collisions south of Jurong Island and off Marina South on 29 and 30 January 2014 respectively, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has been co-ordinating the containment and clean-up efforts. Good progress has been made since the start of the operations.
