As the Port of Singapore’s ambitions continue to become clearer with the construction of Tuas Mega-Terminal, a combination of technologies and innovations will increase the efficiency and safety of operations at the world’s busiest container transhipment hub. Wärtsilä responded to this by opening up a Wärtsilä Acceleration Centre.

MPA Singapore issued a marine circular providing information about the procedures needed to be done when a vessel manoeuvres into its ports, effective from 08 April 2019. The circular provides guidelines for vessels proceeding to or departing from a terminal in a reporting sector.

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore has published Port Marine Circular (PMC) No. 06 of 2019 to inform ship masters, owners, and agents of vessels of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (Port Limits – Suspension) Notification 2019 that came into operation on 08 April 2019 at 0001hours.

The Singapore Maritime Institute (SMI) will present the Singapore Maritime R&D Roadmap 2030 to optimise R&D efforts and resources for greater value co-creation within the maritime industry.

A joint industry program between Maritime Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and DNV GL class society was announced on April 9. The joint program will consist of ten member companies of the Singapore Shipping Association (SSA) to examine how spare parts produced by 3D printers can help the industry to cut costs and downtimes.

MPA Singapore informed of a Port Limits - Suspension Notification, that came into operation on 8 April 2019. The circular suspends Singapore's and Malaysia's implementation of overlapping limits, bringing back the port limits in place prior to 25 October 2018 and 6 December 2018 respectively.

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore is co-organising a workshop with the International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities (IALA) to support the operationalisation of e-navigation solutions. This is the first workshop since Singapore's election to the IALA Council in 2018. The MPA-IALA e-navigation workshop will take place from 8 to 10 April.

Ahead of the 2020 sulphur cap, MPA Singapore warned captains and owners of ships that are caught burning non-compliant fuel, that they could face up to two years in prison. In addition, other penalties can also take place, such as a fine of up to S$10,000 ($7,400). MPA Singapore will also use fuel-testing service providers to conduct detailed laboratory analysis of fuel samples.

Fujitsu announced the results of a field trial that was conducted with the help of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore. This trial analyzed marine traffic risks in the Singapore Strait, with Fujitsu presenting the usefulness of a new ship collision risk prediction technology. This new technology leverages the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in predicting near misses between vessels.

MPA Singapore announced it has completed investigation on the collision between the Greece-registered bulk carrier 'Pireas' and the Malaysian Government vessel 'Polaris' in Singapore Territorial Waters off Tuas, in February.
