LNG carrier Fukurokuju named at Kawasaki Heavy

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) took part in a naming ceremony for the newbuilding liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier LNG FUKUROKUJU, which is co-owned by MOL and Kansai Electric Power, at Sakaide Works of Kawasaki Heavy Industries. Among the many guests on hand were KEPCO President and Director Yagi, who named the new vessel, and his wife, who cut the rope. The LNG FUKUROKUJU will serve a broad range of projects including the Australia/Pacific LNG Project after the delivery. The vessel adopts a new steam turbine engine that reuses steam for heating, which will also reduce fuel consumption, and an advanced heat insulation system that offers the lowest LNG vaporization rate - 0.08% - of any LNG carrier in the world. Its environment-friendly, economically-advanced design also effectively controls surplus boil-off gas. MOL orders methanol- fueled carriers

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has ordered methanol carriers with the world's first methanol burned dual-fueled low-speed diesel main engine. This engine building has already been completed, and its manufacturer, Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding (MES), has test-operated the unit using methanol fuel in Tamano Works, and confirmed that it met expected performance. MOL ordered methanol carriers, which will be equipped with this diesel main engine, from Minaminippon Shipbuilding. The vessels will be delivered in 2016, and serve for Waterfront Shipping Company under a long-term charter contract. By burning methanol with this diesel main engine, emissions of CO2 and NOx are significantly less when burning methanol rather than fuel oil. Thus, methanol is an important fuel that does not include SOx and can replace fuel oil and thereby place fewer burdens on the environment. Besides using methanol to drive the main engine, the new vessel will be one of the first to install the ballast water treatment system and energy saving devices fitted in front and behind the propellers to help improve fuel efficiency. In other words, this new vessel will offer very eco-friendly performance. MOL will expand its methanol transport service by meeting a broad range of customer needs with use ...

Energy-saving Propeller Boss Cap Fins system reaches milestone

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) announced that the energy-saving Propeller Boss Cap Fins (PBCF) - developed by MOL, West Japan Fluid Engineering Laboratory and Nakashima-Mitsuwa Propeller, and marketed by MOL Tech - have now been ordered for 3,000 vessels worldwide. The PBCF is an energy-saving device attached to the propeller of a vessel. It breaks up the hub vortex generated behind the rotating propeller, resulting in a decrease of more than 9,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year because of a 3-5% reduction in fuel consumption, when installed on a large-scale containership. Research and development on the PBCF started in 1986, and sales began the following year. Since then an increasing number of shipowners, mainly in Japan, began to adopt the system. By 2006, the 19th year since the start of sales, the PBCF had been ordered for 1,000 vessels. Backed by concerns over rising fuel prices and growing awareness of the need to reduce CO2emissions, it has gained worldwide recognition and the owners and operators who believed in PBCF’s high-quality and performance have repeatedly ordered. The number of ships adopting it has doubled in just five years, reaching the 2,000 vessel milestone in 2011, and now exceeding the ...
