Test of MOL's Condition-based Engine Monitoring System started

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. announced that it has started a demonstration test of a next-generation condition-based engine monitoring system called “CMAXS e-GICSX” (electronic Global Internet Customer Support neXt) (1) aboard the recently delivered methanol carrier MAYARO. MOL is conducting the test in cooperation with Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK), Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MES), and MES Technoservice Co., Ltd. The system relies on early detection of abnormalities in the electronically controlled engine to ensure correct preventive maintenance and reduce life cycle costs.MOL centrally collects big data gathered from its operated vessels, aiming to establish an integrated vessel operation support network that allows timely analysis of results on shore and at sea through marine onboard broadband systems to support vessel operation, reduce environmental impact, improve cost efficiency, and streamline vessel management, in addition to other benefits. The demonstration test is part of this initiative. The “CMAXS e-GICSX” uses the combination of technologies accumulated through MES’s “e-GICS” (2) system and a cutting-edge data analysis function using ClassNK’s “CMAXS” system (3), based on joint research between ClassNK and MES. A comparative analysis of the “CMAXS e-GICSX” system will be verified on the MAYARO, a vessel operated by MOL, which has a high level ...

ClassNK starts verification tests on MOL vessel

ClassNK  has commenced actual verification tests of its next-generation condition-based monitoring (CBM) system ClassNK CMAXS e-GICSX for Mitsui’s MAN B&W engines. The system is being jointly developed by ClassNK, Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., and MES Technoservice Co., Ltd. and the verification test is being conducted on a MOL-managed vessel with the cooperation of Mitsui O.S.K. Lines.   ClassNK CMAXS e-GICSX is unlike any other CBM system to date. Based on voyage data, including weather and sea condition, and machinery data collected from multiple sensors installed on the engine, ClassNK CMAXS e-GICSX can detect machinery abnormalities and, based on abnormality detection results, provide troubleshooting that can be accessed onboard even without an internet connection.     ClassNK CMAXS e-GICSX uses a sophisticated algorithm to analyze correlations between multiple sensing data. Through the use of this algorithm, precise abnormality detection is carried out based on voyage data and large amounts of data collected from the electronically controlled diesel engines.A total of three vessels from shipping companies including MOL Group have been installed with ClassNK CMAXS e-GICSX and the effectiveness of the abnormality detection results and troubleshooting function will be verified. The verification test will go on until spring 2016.  ClassNK will ...

OTS supports MOL’s commitment to reducing refrigerant consumption

Oceanic Technical Solutions has secured a long-term service contract with Mitsui O.S.K Lines MOL LNG Transport (Europe) Ltd for the annual inspection, leak testing, condition monitoring and analysis of the refrigeration plants aboard all 15 LNG carriers in the Japanese shipowner’s European managed fleet.Oceanic Technical Solutions’ Managing Director, Robert Chesters, said: “The service agreement we have signed with MOL is to ensure that the refrigeration plant installed on these vessels is completely leak-tight, resulting in significant cost savings for the owner. With new refrigerant blends costing upwards of US$2000 per cylinder, we can pinpoint system failures and prevent costly refrigerant escaping to atmosphere. At the same time ensuring that vessels are running to the optimum efficiency and reducing their environmental footprint.“Fleet managers are under increasing commercial and environmental pressure to curtail the amount of refrigerant consumed and our experience tells us that containment is the only solution. A shipboard plant is no different to a domestic refrigerator. It is a contained system that if properly maintained should not require constant topping up. Refrigerant is not a consumable it is an asset that should be retained.”Service engineers have completed their assessment of the first vessel under the MOL LNG agreement, the ...

MOL reaches agreement on continuing Uruguay LNG FSRU Project

MOL announced that the company has reached a basic agreement with Gas Sayago, a joint venture between Uruguay's state oil company ANCAP and state power company UTE, to continue the floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) project led by Gas Sayago. The government of Uruguay recently cancelled its contract with GNLS S.A., a 50-50 joint venture between ENGIE of France and Marubeni Corporation, and announced plans to continue the project by using MOL's FSRU.MOL also reached a basic agreement with Gas Sayago to go ahead with the project under the new project structure. In October 2013, MOL signed a 20-year charter contract for an FSRU in the port of Montevideo, Uruguay, with GNLS, which was entrusted with the construction, ownership, and operation of the terminal project. This is the first FSRU project in which MOL will solely build, own, and operate the facility. The FSRU that will serve the project is under construction at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co., Ltd., in South Korea. It will be equipped with the largest LNG storage tank (263,000m3) of any FSRU in the world, and is expected to arrive in Uruguay and be ready for service in mid-2017.FSRU outlinesLength :345.00 mBeam :55.00 mLNG storage capacity :263,000 m3Regassification ...

MOL tests new energy-saving windshield on its boxship

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) announced that it has started demonstration tests of a new windshield for containerships, which has the potential to reduce wind resistance, save fuel, and reduce CO2 emissions. MOL jointly developed the device with MOL Techno-Trade, Ouchi Ocean Consultant, Akishima Laboratory  and the University of Tokyo. The project was backed by the "Joint R&D for Industry Program", in which Nippon Kaiji Kyokai promotes wide-ranging R&D activities in cooperation with industry, government and academia. The new windshield was installed on the bow of the MOL-operated containership MOL MARVEL, and a demonstration test of its effectiveness in reducing CO2 emissions is under way. With today's larger containerships, the height of the containers loaded on their decks has increased, subjecting the vessels to greater wind resistance. MOL recognized the need to address this issue in a cost-effective way. Development of the new device began with an examination of the bow's aerodynamic form through wind tunnel testing. This led to the adoption of a horseshoe-shaped design, which encloses the front line of the stacked containers to maximize the wind resistance-reducing effect while minimizing the weight of the main unit. The new windshield has enough design strength to meet the ClassNK rules concerning wave impact ...
