Efforts to address marine debris problem

Marine plastic debris is a serious environmental problem that needs immediate global attention. DNV GL says that has now begun efforts to address the problem in a partnership project with WWF-Norway, called Plastic Aquatic. Even when all preventative measures for reducing plastic pollution have been taken, there will still be large amounts of plastic in the oceans, and cleanup will be necessary. Creating efficient solutions requires understanding of the problem in all its complexity. Together, DNV GL and WWF Norway have partnered to create a concept platform which makes further research and innovation possible. The world needs solutions to remove environmental toxins and plastics from the ecosystem, even if we are able to remove only a small fraction. This must be done without having significant negative effects on the marine life. At the same time, we are in serious need of political will, money and arrangements to prevent new debris from ending up in the ocean in the future, says Nina Jensen, general secretary of WWF-Norway. The seas and oceans are increasingly becoming the waste dump of the planet. The European Commission aims to adopt additional measures which could contribute to a further substantive reduction in the future.EC issued last October ...

iPad app speeds delivery of energy efficiency benefits from DNV GL

DNV GL has launched a new iPad app that will make it easier for small businesses to participate in utility-sponsored energy efficiency programs. The Direct Install (DI) app reduces the time required for contractors to prepare and present a business-specific energy efficiency proposal. The app's streamlined process puts the customer on a fast-track to saving energy and cutting costs. For small businesses, these savings can provide a substantial boost to the bottom line. DNV GL implements DI programs for many utilities across the U.S. "We developed the DI iPad app to expand small business participation and reduce program delivery costs," said John Masiello, Area Manager for DNV GL. "This app will help contractors connect with more small businesses by providing timely delivery and enhanced motivational tools for cost-effective, energy efficiency improvements." A prototype is now available from Apple's iTunes store. Adam Larson, an experienced Direct Install contractor with Oscar W. Larson Co., has integrated other mobile applications in the company's day-to-day operations and noted that the new DI app would be greatly beneficial for increasing program participation. With the iPad app, an approved DI contractor can perform a facility energy assessment, prepare recommendations for efficiency improvements and produce a proposal ...

Joint Industry Project to enhance the offshore leak detection approach

Leak detection is a considerable challenge facing the industry and DNV GL has therefore taken the lead in establishing a new Joint Industry Project. Twenty key industry players are partnering to develop a best practice for designing and implementing offshore leak detection systems. Over the last few years, following several oil releases, there has been an increasing focus by both operators and authorities on the environmental impact related to offshore oil and gas activities. This is especially an issue that needs to be addressed now since society's tolerance for leaks is dropping and we are moving into the Arctic and other environmentally sensitive areas. Hydrocarbon leak detection systems are a requirement on the Norwegian Continental Shelf but authorities around the world are also increasingly demanding such systems for new field developments. There are various leak detection sensors available but they all have limited coverage and application areas. Some sensors will only detect gas, some cover a small area with high sensitivity while others cover a large area with low sensitivity. The challenge is to integrate these into a complete system that provides the required coverage and sensitivity while at the same time avoiding frequent false alarms. In addition, leak detection ...

Environmentalists welcome EU proposal on Arctic

The European Parliament has passed a resolution calling for a protected area around the North Pole which could ban oil companies and industrial fishing fleets from the region, according to Greenpeace. The move represents a clear break from the current positions of 'Arctic Council' members such as Norway, Denmark, Canada and Russia who have resisted calls for permanent protection of the Arctic region. In contrast, Finland, another Arctic state, recently adopted the sanctuary proposal as official policy.Reacting to the news, Greenpeace activist and Arctic 30 member Sini Saarela from Finland said: "What happens in the Arctic matters to us all. I'm delighted by this news because it will spark a new conversation that we need to have together. By calling for a sanctuary around the North Pole, MEPs have responded to the millions of people who want to protect the Arctic for future generations. "This is a direct challenge to the small group of countries who are rushing to open up the fragile Arctic for oil drilling and industrial fishing. The status quo is starting to crack, and this now demands a real response from those who see the melting Arctic simply as a new source of profit." The European ...

LNG bunkering infrastructure around the world

Lars Petter Blikom, Segment Director LNG at DNV GL, summarizes all known LNG bunkering facility developments around the world as of January 2014. In DNV GL's blog, Lars Petter Blikom has posted his presentation on Global LNG bunkering infrastructure and he also comments: ''2 years have gone by since I said I was dead tired of hearing the chicken and egg parallel to LNG bunkering. Even today you'll hear this phrase in any given LNG bunkering conference. If these speakers instead of speaking had spent some time observing the market developments, they'd find that there are chicken all over the place. Just have a look at these maps and summary lists for LNG bunkering developments around the world'' Image Credit: Slide from Lars Petter Blikom Presentation, DNV GL   His presentation includes latest developments on LNG bunkering infrastructure in the below areas: Baltic & North Sea ECA (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, France, UK,  Finland, Estonia, Lithuania/ latvia, Poland) North American ECA (West Coast, East Coast, Gulf of Mexico, Great Lakes, Canada) South America (Argentina) Mediterranean Sea (Spain, Turkey) Asia- Pacific ( China, Korea, Japan, Singapore, Sri Langka, India, Australia) Middle East Further information may be found at the presentation ...

Profitable technologies to be compliant with environmental regulations

Motivated by stricter environmental regulations, growing pressure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, rising fuel costs, and availability of new energy sources the shipping industry is forced to consider alternative fuels and new technologies. Battery ready vessels might be one of the alternatives. There are a number of alternative fuels or energy carriers that can be used in shipping, all with different benefits and challenges. What fuel a shipping company should choose for a specific vessel depends on a variety of factors, including ship type, operational profile, and trading pattern. A vessel ordered today will still operate in the 2030s, in a world with unknown fuel availability, fuel prices, and regulatory requirements. Making the wrong fuel choice today can have major implications for the commercial performance of a ship over the next decades, including tradability and the second hand value. DNV GL is offering services tailored to assist ship owners in their selection and implementation of technology. DNV GL has evaluated more than 20 different ‘LNG ready' cases, covering bulk carriers, chemical tankers, general cargo carriers, container vessels, fast ferries, gas carriers, and a heavy lift vessel. DNV GL is now also using the approach to evaluate whether vessels are ‘battery ...
