At the UNFCCC Climate Conference (COP 22), in Marrakesh, ICS said that the recent IMO agreement on a CO2 Road Map for shipping is a significant decision giving further impetus to the substantial CO2 reductions that are already being delivered by the global industry.

According to IBIA, it will be possible for states that are party to the Ballast Water Management (BWM) Convention to grant exemptions for vessels operating within specific geographical areas from the requirement to manage ballast water under the same risk area (SRA) concept.

IBIA points out that the IMO has adopted a mandatory fuel consumption data collection system for international shipping, requiring ships above 5,000 gross tonnage to start collecting and reporting data to an IMO database from the start of 2019.

IMO MEPC 70 meeting concluded last week with significant decisions regarding global sulphur cap, carbon emissions and BWM treaty which will enter into force on September 8th, 2017. Regarding the implementation of the BWMC, the Committee adopted ‘revised Guidelines for approval of ballast water management systems (G8)’.

DNV GL has issued a guidance paper to assist shipowners in the different choices and challenges for on-time compliance with Global Sulphur Cap as agreed during MEPC 70. The global 0.5% sulphur cap will be introduced in 2020, and up to 70,000 ships may be affected by the regulation according to IMO estimates

The delegates to the MEPC70 meeting in London have finally agreed to implement a global fuel sulphur cap as of January 2020. While the cap will create a 0.5% fuel sulphur limit worldwide, it does not necessitate a switch to low-sulphur fuel. Alfa Laval has announced that PureSOx scrubber platform meets fuel sulphur limits without switching from residual fuels.

The UN-backed IMO has set new rules to cut sulfur emissions from ships to 0.5% from 2020. Yara is easing shipowners’ concerns over additional costs by offering a cost-effective solution compared to low-sulfur fuel.

SSI has welcomed progress made at the IMO MEPC 70 for developing a strategy to reduce GHG emissions from shipping by 2023 and highlighted that critical work must be done now to enable shipping industry to define the ‘level of ambition’ for emissions reduction.
