Hong Kong advises on amended Merchant Shipping Regulation

The Hong Kong Marine Department published a notice advising operators on the amendment to the Merchant Shipping (Prevention of Air Pollution) Regulation for incorporating the latest requirements of MARPOL Annex VI. The Amendment Regulation will come into force on 31 May 2019. The new requirements will regard all Hong Kong registered ocean going vessels (OGVs), wherever they are and all OGVs within Hong Kong waters.

CO2 emissions marked record growth in 2016

The World Meteorological Organization noted that CO2 concentrations in the Earth’s atmosphere increased with a record speed in 2016, with only last year’s increase 50% higher than the average of the past 10 years.

Revised MARPOL Annex V garbage requirements

Clean Arctic Alliance and the Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators have recently confirmed their support of a ban on heavy fuel oil from Arctic shipping and stressed the need for setting IMO a deadline for its work on a new regulation with the aim to phase out Arctic HFO by 2020.
