Shipowners can improve communication, to prevent misinformation and minimize the feeling of abandonment for seafarers, said Ms. Caitlin Vaughan, Project Manager at ISWAN during a webinar last week.

The talks about seafarers and the situation these days have been in the spotlight, with the COVID-19 pandemic playing the lead role on how the shipping industry is evolving.

As much as it’s written and spoken about the importance of mental and physical health  of the seafarers who work far from medical providers, far from their families and home, in harsh environments and under constant pressure and increased responsibility not many Ship owners are making progress with making access to mental health specialists readily available and usable, notes Mrs Elena Donina Glukhman.

A new film “Coronavirus – Mental Resilience On Board”, identifies some of the threats for those onboard; and focuses on how to combat stress to maintain a good and positive mental state by including details of skills and coping strategies to help.  

Alandia Marine insurance firm hosted an interview with Dr Claire Pekcan, Director at Safe Marine to shed attention once again on fatigue, which is a great concern for seafarers and the whole maritime community. There are things that seafarers can do for themselves to counteract fatigue, Dr Pekcan highlights and a Fatigue Self Help can help towards.

Norway-based Wilhelmsen Ship Management (WSM) is crowdfunding to support maritime charity Mission to Seafarers (MtS), in addressing the hardships for seafarers amid the COVID-19 crisis. 

The issue of recreation onboard was, along with connectivity, at the center of concerns for seafarers during the latest SAFETY4SEA Crew Wellness Survey. Across a sample of 9,768 seafarers from every part of the world, there were many respondents who touched upon the issue, proposing additional entertainment opportunities.

A new online platform was launched, called Offshore Titans. The platform aims to provide psychological and lifestyle help necessary to maintain mental stamina within the offshore energy industry.

WHO defines mental health “as a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.”
