The Dutch Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management Rijkswaterstaat and Geneva-based shipping giant MSC (Mediterranean Shipping Company) have located a total of 238 out of the 281 containers that were lost overboard the mega container ship 'MSC Zoe' last week. 

MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company announced that it will pay the full costs of the clean-up of the 2 January MSC Zoe container spill. The company will continue searching the sea for the containers which fell overboard, 'until the last one is found'. 

According to the Russian Embassy in Benin, the location of Russians captured by pirates, on January 2, in Benin’s territorial waters in the Gulf of Guinea is unknown. As stated by the Embassy, representatives for the company noted that the kidnappers have not contacted yet. 

The Dutch Government decided to deploy troops in order to help in the clean up operation for the over 200 containers that fell from the MSC Zoe containership on January 2. Relevant authorities are warning people not to touch the containers, as some of them contain dangerous chemical substances.

Traffic on the Suez Canal reached the second highest daily traffic ever recorded on January 2, Suez Canal Authority Chairman Mohab Mamish informed. Specifically, 72 vessels with an overall tonnage of 5.1 million tons sailed through the canal. 33 vessels passed through the canal coming from the north and 39 from the south.

Pirates attacked the container ship MSC Mandy, on January 2, off Benin, West Africa, kidnapping six crewmembers. The vessel was sailing through the Gulf of Guinea when the attack took place. At the time of the attack, the ship had sailed from Togo and is currently anchored off Lagos.

MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company informed that it has started a clean-up operation in response to a substantial spill of containers in the North Sea. Namely, the mega container ship MSC ZOE lost over 200 containers during the night from January 1 to January 2 in North sea during rough weather.

As per a previous announcement in late September, Geneva-based Mediterranean Shipping Company is introducing new bunker charges as of 1 January 2019 in line with 2020 sulphur cap. After considerable analysis of operating costs and related market factors, the company has now established a new price mechanism – the BRC (Bunker Recovery Charge) – which will be transparent to respective trades.

Five of the largest container shipping companies, MSC, Maersk, CMA CGM, Hapag-Lloyd, and Ocean Network Express, are planning to establish an association to pave the way for digitalization, standardization and interoperability of the container shipping industry.

Maqta Gateway, an Abu Dhabi Ports subsidiary, announced that it will conduct its first testing of international blockchain solution 'Silsal', along with  a maritime operator. This will happen in cooperation with MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company. 'Silsal' provides a link between stakeholders across the trade community using the electronic ledger system.
