​IMO MEPC 81, that took place March 18-22, agreed on an illustration of a possible draft outline of an “IMO net-zero framework” for cutting greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) from international shipping. The draft outline illustration lists regulations under the (MARPOL, which will be adopted or amended to allow for a new global fuel standard and a new global pricing mechanism for maritime GHG emissions. 

The maritime industry, a cornerstone of global trade and commerce, is currently navigating a dynamic regulatory landscape that shapes its present and future. As we look ahead, several key items dominate the regulatory agenda for the maritime sector.

Animal carcasses generated during the normal operation of a ship are permitted to be discharged into the sea complying with the provisions of MARPOL Annex V and taking into account the guidelines developed by the IMO. 

A prohibition on the use and carriage of heavy fuel oil as fuels in Arctic waters will come into effect in 2024, as part of amendments to MARPOL Annex I, MEPC.329(76), which entered into force on 1 November 2022.

Last IMO Committee, MEPC 79, took place from 12-16 December 2022 adopting amendments to MARPOL Annex V to make the Garbage Record Book mandatory also for ships of 100 gross tonnage and above and less than 400 gross tonnage, among others issues.

After the Amendments to the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) Annex VI entered into force, the World Maritime University welcomed the development.

From November 1st, 2022, the amendments to MARPOL Annex I regarding the prohibition on the use and carriage for use as fuel of heavy fuel oil by ships in Arctic waters came into force.

Amendments to the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) Annex VI enter into force on 1 November 2022.

MSC supported the criticism for the carbon intensity indicator (CII) regulation, which enters into force today (1 November, 2022), along with the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI).

ABS has issued a regulatory update to remind that on November 1st, 2022, amendments to MARPOL Annex VI will enter into force and set the stage for the implementation of the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) beginning 1 January 2023.
