Australia's Pilbara Ports Authority has delivered a total monthly throughput of 49.7 Mt for February 2020, representing a 9% decrease compared to the same month in 2019. The total throughput for the 2019/20 financial year to date is 461Mt, an increase of less than 1% from the same time last year.

HAROPA, the port complex of Le Havre, Rouen and Paris, saw a 5% drop in maritime traffic in 2019, with a total of 90 million tonnes of maritime traffic over the year. However, the bulk and container sectors grew by 13% marking the best figure since 1992.

The Montreal Port Authority launched an upgrade of the Trucking PORTaI application, which helps port truck drivers plan their routes better and also enhances the traffic flow on port territory, playing a major role in reducing GHG emissions.

EMSA announced the Agency’s Traffic Density Maps (TDM) which was launched by EMODnet, offering a simple but effective way of displaying ship movement patterns. The maps work by using AIS data, received by EMSA from the Agency’s data providers. This data is then processed to recreate the track of each individual ship from its recorded positions.

US authorities criminally charged climate change protesters for shutting down the largest US energy-export port for a day by dangling from a bridge. The protest organized by Greenpeace closed part of the Houston Ship Channel on Thursday. 

Starting from 1st August and until 30 November 2019, the Panama Canal will implement speed limits aimed at protecting cetaceans, including whales, dolphins and other large aquatic mammals, during their nearby seasonal migration. As such, ships should proceed at a speed of not more than 10 knots in specified areas.

The Ministry of Transport and Communications of Finland published its new, updated Water Traffic Act, which will unite the traffic rules and signs used in water transport. The aim is to enhance the maritime safety, boost responsible boating and also provide a favourable environment for water transport automation. 

In an official statement, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) announced that the wreck of the supply vessel 'OCEAN COOPER 2', which sank within Singapore Territorial Waters in February, does not pose a risk to navigation. 

The Russian Direct Investment Fund, ROSATOM, Norilsk Nickel and DP World have agreed to jointly implement a project for the integrated development of the Northern Sea Route. The quadrilateral agreement of intent was signed on 6 June during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. 

Rising global maritime traffic could lead to sharp increases in invasive species around the world over the next 30 years, according to a recent study by McGill University researchers. The findings suggest that shipping growth will far outweigh climate change in the spread of non-indigenous pests.
