The Russian Direct Investment Fund, ROSATOM, Norilsk Nickel and DP World have agreed to jointly implement a project for the integrated development of the Northern Sea Route. The quadrilateral agreement of intent was signed on 6 June during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. 

Rising global maritime traffic could lead to sharp increases in invasive species around the world over the next 30 years, according to a recent study by McGill University researchers. The findings suggest that shipping growth will far outweigh climate change in the spread of non-indigenous pests.

IMO’s Facilitation Committee addresses the efficiency of shipping by dealing with all matters regarding the facilitation of international maritime traffic, including the arrival, stay and departure of ships, persons and cargo from ports. The Committee is meeting for its 43rd session, from 8 to 12 of April, coinciding with the entry into force of new requirements for all public authorities to introduce electronic exchange of information between ships and ports.

Short sea container services between the UK and EU could provide alternative capacity to alleviate possible congestion at the Port of Dover post-Brexit, according to a study by global shipping consultancy Drewry. These latest findings follow an earlier study by Drewry.

Hapag-Lloyd informed that the hole in the hull of the container ship Dublin Express, from which an oil spill occurred at Global Marine New York Container Terminal, on March 28, has now been sealed. The US Coast Guard also confirmed that containment booms are now in place, which contain the oil spill and protect the nearby marine environment. 

ORBCOMM, a provider of Machine-to-Machine and Internet of Things solutions, announced that Canada has exercised the option for an additional year on their contract through ORBCOMM's Canadian partner Maerospace, a supplier of AIS data and maritime domain awareness solutions. ORBCOMM will be providing satellite AIS data for ship tracking and other maritime navigational and safety efforts to Canada.

USCG and partner agencies are responding to an oil spill that occurred in the Arthur Kill waterway near the Goethals Bridge, Thursday afternoon, after fuel-oil leaked from a commercial container ship while moored at the Global Marine New York Container Terminal in Staten Island.

The Port of Amsterdam informed that it cannot open up the route via the IJmuiden lock complex for traffic in April 2019. This is because the safety on the lock route can still not be sufficiently guaranteed due to the many construction activities at the new sealock. It is not  known when the route will open again. This will not affect the delivery date of the new sea lock at the beginning of 2022.

Most of Algeria's ports have been closed to traffic as a result of heavy weather, according to data provided by the Standard P&I Club. The closed ports as of 1st February include Arzew, Oran, Mostaganem, Skikda and Tenes.

With effect from 6 December 2018, Singapore’s port limits have been revised. The MPA Singapore issued a new circular informing that, from 19 December 2018, vessels shall comply with the amended reporting procedures for vessels manoeuvring in port. Also, all power driven vessels will be required to be fitted with a working transponder as a port entry requirement.
