Maritime New Zealand informed that the Marlborough District Council’s prosecuted two intoxicated boaties, after the 13-metre launch 'Carpe Diem' ran aground on Mabel Island near Picton, on 4 April 2017. The two men, both of Christchurch, were fined a total of $5,625 and ordered to pay more than $1,000 costs by the Court on 1st of May. 

Six stevedore workers were transported to hospital, after suffering carbon monoxide poisoning while onboard a vessel at Napier Port, New Zealand, Monday night. According to local media reports, there was a problem with a turbo unit that resulted in accumulated fumes poisoning the workers who were in the ship’s hold.

A boatie who sailed a yacht in an unsafe condition from Wellington to Westport has been sentenced to community detention, after ignoring conditions imposed by Maritime NZ that the vessel could not be operated outside Wellington Harbour. Charges were filed under the Maritime Transport Act for operating a ship in a manner that caused unnecessary danger or risk to other people.

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the sinking of the RoRo ferry 'TEV Wahine', New Zealand’s worst maritime disaster in modern times, Maritime NZ shared what has changed with respect to safety. The tragedy helped change international maritime safety conventions and standards.

The skipper of a recreational boat that collided with a rocky outcrop in the Coromandel last January has been ordered to pay a total of almost $130,000 in reparations to three victims on board. Speed and alcohol were factors in the night-time crash which threw one man overboard.

A trial of water laser speed guns is showing too many boaties are breaking speeding rules in Marlborough, as in a two-hour trial last week, 10 recreational boaties were caught speeding, Maritime New Zealand informed.

Maritime New Zealand informed that it is working closely with stevedoring companies to improve safety practices in the log loading industry, following an intensive health and safety inspection campaign earlier this year.

The skipper of a ceremonial waka, which capsized on Whakatane River bar in January last year, has been convicted and fined $1,350 by a New Zealand court, for putting his five crew in unnecessary danger. Maritime NZ said this is a reminder to the skippers that they are responsible for the safety of everybody on-board.

Two boaties were rescued from Cape Jackson in the Marlborough Sounds, where they were stranded after their 10-metre launch was wrecked on rocks, the  Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand informed. The pair had been stranded on the rocks for eleven hours with no way to call for help. Their lifejackets were found on the beach.

A British family were saved off a reef south-east of Niue overnight, when their 15-metre catamaran "Avanti" ran aground in heavy seas, Maritime NZ informed. The Rescue Coordination Centre of New Zealand received their distress call and coordinated with a nearby yacht anchored inside the reef.
