In January 2018, Maritime NZ surveyed people who hold fishing-related certificates, asking their experiences on fatigue and the steps they are taking to minimise it. Most of the 318 respondents were skippers and 82% have been working in the industry for more than 10 years.
Fatigue is a main problem for commercial fishing, often the cause of devastating and sometimes even fatal accidents. In the latest issue of its Lookout publication, Maritime New Zealand shared an infographic citing the key causes of fatigue in fishing sector and best practices when there is struggle to sleep at sea.
