The amendments to FAL Convention have entered into force globally from 1st January 2018,  to strengthen seafarers' rights to shore leave and to achieve the smooth transit in ports of ships, cargo and passengers. 

NYK and NYK Group companies MTI Co. Ltd., as well as Japan Marine Science Inc., released partial findings of a study on collision risk judgement and the autonomous operation of vessels, on 26 December.

The United Kingdom Hydrographic Office announced that it is introducing regular tidal data updates to ADMIRALTY TotalTide. Version 18 will allow the UKHO to send new tidal data to mariners through ATT on a more frequent basis. This will allow mariners to access the latest tidal data when making predictions.

Dualog, the digital platform at sea, has secured a contract to handle the business email and data transfer needs for 90 vessels managed by Greek ship management company Thenamaris. 

Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports that half of unloaded containers are being carried by container giants, following data analysis of loaded containers that were unloaded at the Port of Rotterdam. Most of these container giants originate from ports in China. After calling at other Asian ports, they arrive in Europe, where their cargo is usually unloaded at several ports as well.
