A new scientific project will be launched to map the ocean floor by 2030. The Seabed 2030 project will use data from underwater drones, merchant ships, fishing boats and even explorers, to solve one of the world’s long lasting mysteries. The data will be put together at Britain’s National Oceanography Center, with the hope to produce the first bathymetric map by the end of 2018.

The new software monitors the operational costs and evaluates the performance towards benchmarks like the Charter Party contract, and will try to give the operators the ability to monitor and track their vessel's performance from a set dashboards and reports. The Charter Party Monitoring features warnings of any issues that could result in disputes towards the Charter Party contract.

Saildrone received $60 million in Series B funding to improve its global fleet of wind-powered ocean sailing drones. "Saildrones" aim to provide high-resolution ocean data and monitor the state of the planet in real time. They are designed for long range long duration ocean data collection missions of up to 12 months.

Speaking at the Singapore Maritime Technology Conference on 25 April 2018, Argyris Stasinakis, a partner with ship tracking intelligence company MarineTraffic, told that more information exchange between shipowners, shippers, ports, equipment manufacturers and IT companies is needed to meet the CO2 emission reduction targets set by the IMO.

Namely, high frequency mapping sonars are being used, which have no negative impact on its diverse ecosystems and marine life.

As a part of the EU project EfficienSea2, the surveillance system manufacturer Vissim has become the first operator to integrate voyage data from the ENSI-system in their own vessel traffic monitoring system, which will allow VTS centres and navigators to drastically reduce their reporting burdens.

FleetManager offers many environmental, piracy and regulatory overlays that can highlight potential sources of delay or hazard. It also can be linked with ChartCo's e-navigation platform, the PassageManager. This facilitates staff on shore to view an active passage plan.

Port operator PSA Singapore will showcase its future port vision, with new technologies for the container terminals in Singapore, including amphibious drones, automated quay cranes, exoskeletons for port staff, and robotic arms for related container activities.
