ABS announced a partnership with Mission Secure to provide cyber protection. Based on the FCI Cyber Risk Methodology, the incorporation of the MSi platform aims to provide ABS with better cyber defence of industrial control systems that operate modern vessels and offshore platforms. FCI Cyber Risk Methodology provides a way to count and quantify risk.

ORBCOMM, a provider of Machine-to-Machine and Internet of Things solutions, announced that Canada has exercised the option for an additional year on their contract through ORBCOMM's Canadian partner Maerospace, a supplier of AIS data and maritime domain awareness solutions. ORBCOMM will be providing satellite AIS data for ship tracking and other maritime navigational and safety efforts to Canada.

Inmarsat has collaborated with the start-up programmes, Rainmaking Trade and Transport Impact and Bluetech Accelerator, to support news businesses focused on the Internet of Things (IoT) and big data innovation in the maritime, ports and logistics supply chain.

MAN Energy Solutions introduced its new digital platform. MAN CEON collects and evaluates operating and sensor data, and enables the real-time monitoring of marine or power-plant engines, turbines and compressors. It also integrates data and information from MAN machinery and its operational environment, and uses intelligent analysis tools for evaluation and forecasting.

XVELA, a maritime business network for ocean carriers and terminal operators, announced that Hapag-Lloyd plans to implement its collaboration services to improve transparency throughout the transportation supply chain and more efficiently employ assets and resources. The first phase of this rollout will use XVELA’s services to enhance communication and collaboration between Hapag-Lloyd planners and terminal partners.

Bunkering is considered as one of the most challenging operations and procedures on board because it requires a great level of effort, time and response in order to be conducted safely. Bunkering is also involved in the new IMO requirement toward the reduction of Green House Gases - and especially CO2 – from ship emissions, the so called IMO Data Collection System.

ECSA and WSC have welcomed the agreement reached by the European Parliament, the Council and the European Commission in their 'trilogue discussions' on the European Maritime Single Window environment proposal last week. The agreement not only harmonises the data that must be reported but also the way that it should be transmitted.

On 8 February 2019 an agreement was reached between the European Council, the European Commission and the European Parliament, regarding the proposal to harmonize ship notifications in Europe, through the a European Maritime Single Window. The final text includes an agreement that provides security for Port Community Systems in relation to the public National Single Windows that have to act as a 'mailbox' for reports to authorities.

MIT engineers have now developed an algorithm that lets AUVs weigh the risks and potential rewards of exploring an unknown region. Specifically, if a vehicle tasked with identifying underwater oil seeps approached a steep, rocky trench, an algorithm could assess the reward level, and the risk level, if it were to take a path through the trench.  

The New York State Energy and Research Development Authority announced the execution of two contracts to study the meteorological and oceanographic (metocean) conditions in the waters off the Atlantic coast of New York, called the New York Bight. The contracts were awarded to Ocean Tech Services and DNV GL. The target date for deployment of these systems is May 2019.
