MAN engine receives EPA certification

 MAN Diesel & Turbo has announced that the MAN 32/44 Common Rail engine family (rated power: 3,600 – 12,000 kW) has received US EPA Certification, a requirement for all engines installed aboard US-flagged vessels.Chuck Griffith, Sales Manager, MAN Diesel & Turbo, North America, said: “This certification is a significant step in our four-stroke, marine-engine strategy for the US market. The engine family has been certified US EPA Tier 2 for Category 3 engines and builds the foundation for us to introduce our US EPA Tier 3 for Category 3 product in 2016. This will allow US customers to benefit from the high power output and low fuel-consumption of our medium-speed, common-rail engines.”US EPA Tier 3 is currently the final emissions tier for Category 3 (≥ 30L/cyl displacement) engines, and is similar to US EPA Tier 4 for Category 1 and 2 (< 30 L/cyl displacement) engines.The US EPA certification process was initiated in response to demand from the American fishing industry. MAN propulsion packages ordered for two dredger newbuildings

  Van Oord has placed an order for two trailing-suction hopper dredgers. Each vessel will feature a complete MAN Diesel & Turbo propulsion package. The vessels will be constructed at CNN LaNaval Shipyard in Sestao, Spain with delivery dates scheduled for 2017. The order is part of Van Oord’s continuous investment programme. The new dredgers will have a hopper capacity of approximately 17,000 m3, a length of 158 metres and a width of 36 metres. They will also be equipped with two suction pipes with submerged e-driven dredge pumps, two shore-discharge dredge pumps, six bottom doors and a total installed power of 23,680 kW. The newbuildings will each have accommodation for 38 persons. Green credentials Special attention was paid to the energy-efficiency of the vessels. The design includes several aspects which result in substantial reductions in fuel consumption and consequently a fall in CO2 emissions. Major cross-industry collaboration on EU-funded project

  A major cross-industry initiative led by Wärtsilä, MAN Diesel & Turbo and Winterthur Gas & Diesel to develop basic technologies for use in 2- and 4-stroke marine engines has been officially launched. The Hercules-2 project is aimed at fostering environmentally sustainable and more efficient shipping. It is in line with general European Union policy and is partly funded by the EU.  Altogether, 32 marine industry partners from 11 different companies, 16 universities, and five research organisations are cooperating in this project, with NTU Athens as coordinator. The R&D efforts focus on four main areas. These are: the application of alternative fuels and the optimisation of fuel flexibility to facilitate seamless switching between different fuels; the development of new materials to support high-temperature component applications; the development of adaptive control methodologies to significantly improve an engine’s performance throughout its life span; and to achieve near-zero emissions via combined, integrated, after-treatment of exhaust gases. “The greatest of the many benefits stemming from Hercules-2 will be the development of new technologies that have a positive impact on our customers’ profitability. Methanol engines of ME-LGI Concept successfully tested

  Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding (MES) – the MAN Diesel & Turbo licensee – recently demonstrated the liquid-gas-injection concept successfully in Japan. The successful demonstration took place on 17 June, 2015 using the very first ME-LGI engine to ever be commercially produced. The engine, with the type designation 7S50ME-B9.3-LGI, is bound for a vessel currently under construction by Minaminippon Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. for Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. Ole Grøne, Senior Vice President – Low Speed Promotion & Sales – MAN Diesel & Turbo described the event as a significant milestone in the development of Diesel technology and said: “The immediate market acceptance of our ME-GI (Gas Injection) engine confirmed the growing demand for low-sulphur, non-HFO options in the face of increasingly stricter sulphur limits in fuel. Two-stage turbocharger passes first test

  MAN Diesel & Turbo’s two-stage turbocharging development project, ECOCHARGE, recently passed a significant milestone on its way to a successful market introduction. The company reports that individual MAN TCR20 and MAN TCX17 units – combined as a single, two-stage turbocharging system – has had a first run on an MAN 12V35/44 gas engine on a test bed at its Augsburg, Germany works. The company reports that the ECOCHARGE system has been developed for both gas- and HFO-burning engines. Now that the TCX series has proven its strengths and functionality on the burner rig, the new ECOCHARGE system will run over the coming months on the engine to prove its strengths and functionality. The test is the first real opportunity to prove the thermodynamic calculations on an engine, which is key to a successful field test. MAN Diesel & Turbo sees great potential in two-stage turbocharged engines, which can be seen in the spate of recent orders for such solutions. MAN revises Propeller Light Running Margin Recommendation

 MAN has issued a Market Update Note providing information on the Light Running Margin (LRM) which is an important design parameter for the safe and efficient operation of a ship. Fuel-saving upgrade package ordered for Odfjell tankers

  MAN Diesel & Turbo’s Propeller & Aft Ship organisation has won an order to retrofit and upgrade a series of 11 × 37,500 dwt vessels from the Odfjell chemical tanker fleet. The vessels are of the Kværner Class and are due to dock during 2015-17, at which time the upgrades will be implemented. The first vessel, ‘M/T Bow Clipper’, will dock and be upgraded in August 2015. Each vessel has an MAN B&W two-stroke engine powering a four-bladed, controllable-pitch propeller and a PTO-driven shaft alternator. The vessels’ new service speed at reduced main-engine output – combined with the implementation of MAN’s highly-efficient Kappel propeller blades, a fairing cone and a pre-fabricated rudder bulb kit – will all contribute to power savings and reduced exhaust-gas emissions. The Kappel blades, fairing cone and rudder bulb are designed and customised for the tanker’s hull and rudder designs. CCS awards world’s first SCR IMO Tier III Approval in Principle

  At an awards ceremony held on 15 April, 2015 at the PrimeServ Academy in Shanghai, MAN Diesel & Turbo SE was awarded approval in principle for its SCR system for the entire medium-speed engine portfolio fulfilling IMO Tier III regulations by the China Classification Society (CCS). Testing took place on an MAN 8L21/31 auxiliary engine with an integrated SCR system but the certificate applies to the entire medium-speed engine portfolio . The MAN-built engine is bound for a DFDS Seaways Ro-Ro vessel, the ‘Petunia Seaways’. The ceremony was attended by major ship owner companies and licensees.
