Maintenance delays risk US Navy’s readiness, report says

The US Government Accountability Office (GAO) issued a report, according to which persistent and substantial delays in vessel maintenance threaten the U.S. Navy’s ability to sustain readiness. The delays are an expense, leading to increased costs, with GAO estimating that the Navy spent more than $1.5 billion in support costs from FY 2008-2018 due to delayed maintenance for its attack submarines alone.

Wärtsilä to acquire Trident BV

Finnish Wärtsilä announced that it has acquired Trident B.V., a Netherland based company specialised in underwater ship maintenance, inspection, and repair services. The acquisition is estimated to be closed in January 2018. 

Suez Canal orders dredgers to maintain navigation efficiency

Suez Canal Authority has signed a contract with Royal IHC for the design and construction of two custom-built 29,190kW heavy-duty rock cutter suction dredgers. The CSDs will be used to maintain and improve the artificial sea-level area that connects the Mediterranean and Red Seas.

Port of Houston's Bayport terminal to receive larger vessels

The completion of maintenance dredging of the Bayport channel was announced to the Port Commission of the Port of Houston Authority. The channel will be maintained by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at a depth of 48.5 feet mean lower low water, enabling the Bayport Container Terminal to receive 45-foot draft vessels.

Wärtsilä, NCLH extend cooperation agreement

Wärtsilä technology group and US-based cruise operator Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings have renewed their existing performance-based service agreement, aiming to ensure the optimum performance levels of the engines on board 10 NCLH cruise ships.

DNV GL, Oshima launch tween deck design at Nor-Shipping

At Nor-Shipping Conference, DNV GL and Oshima Shipbuilding launched a new 65k open-hatch general cargo carrier design. Intended for a wide range of project cargoes and packaged goods, the design includes composite tween decks, to maximize space utilization and save weight. The solution was also awarded an Approval in Principle by DNV GL.
