Collaboration pays off to cut emissions from container shipping

According to Clean Cargo Working Group's annual CO2 emission performance data report for the container shipping industry, the industry performance is improving with average CO2 performance for carriers across all trade lanes improving 8% from 2013 to 2014 (29% since 2009) – which is a quite remarkable achievement in a single year.Maersk Line is performing better than CCWG average on almost all trades and globally Maersk Line has more than a 10% advantage over the global CCWG industry average. In comparison with last year’s numbers, Maersk Line’s CO2 average across all trade lanes has improved 32% in the previous three years.More than 40 global customers and container carriers are part of the CCWG (representing 80% of all global container shipments) and are dedicated to accelerating sustainability improvements in the container shipping industry. They do this by developing aligned environmental standards, tools and comparable performance data, enabling customers to benchmark environmental performance and integrate environmental performance indicators into procurement decisions.A particular strength of the CCWG is to collect and report CO2 emission performance data not only on a global level, but also more granularly for a set of standardised trade lanes, e.g. Asia to the West Coast of North America. Furthermore the submitted ...

Maersk Line tests alternative marine fuel

The trials are due to begin in the first half of 2016, and will see the fuel supplied from the Gibraltar-San Roque refinery to Maersk ships following the installation of an MSAR manufacturing unit at the site. Installation and operation permits are currently being sought for the new unit. The trial program is expected to run until the end of 2016, or early 2017 when engine tests on the fuel will be completed. Subsequently, the sale of the fuel from the refinery would be made following regulatory and commercial approvals.“We are delighted to have this opportunity to meet the fuel requirements of a leading partner in the marine industry with Maersk using a pioneering technology from Quadrise. Cepsa has been a leader in marine fuel technology for many years and this agreement will help to consolidate our position,” said Federico Molina, head of Cepsa´s Refining Unit.Quadrise has developed the fuel to provide an alternative for shipping, refining and power generation markets.  The MSAR oil-in-water emulsion fuel technology makes heavy hydrocarbon residues easier to use by producing a lower viscosity oil mixed with water.  Alternative fuel emulsions, which are water in oil, are produced from heavy fuel oil.  By emulsifying refinery residues, ...

Maersk Line to add more vessels in its fleet

The new building contract with Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has a value of USD 1.1 billion and was signed in July 2015 by Søren Toft, Chief Operating Officer, Maersk Line (left) and Mr. Sam H. Ka, Chief Operation Officer of HHI (right). Maersk Line signed a new building contract with Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) in July to build nine vessels with a 14,000 TEU capacity and an option for up to eight additional vessels. The contract has a value of USD 1.1 billion and was signed by Mr. Sam H. Ka, Chief Operation Officer of HHI and Søren Toft, Chief Operating Officer, Maersk Line.“I am very pleased about this order for which we have taken a new approach,” says Søren Toft. “The vessels will be designed to operate in and perform efficiently across many trades and not just designed for one specific trade. They will help us stay competitive and make our fleet more flexible and efficient.”Designing vessels with a flexible operational profile is a first for Maersk Line. By moving away from hulls designed with a certain speed and draft in mind, Maersk Line is strengthening its fleet with vessels which can be deployed on East-West or North-South trades where ...
