Maersk ship takes on Quadrise Fuel’s MSAR emulsion

Fuel produced at the AB Orlen Lietuva refinery being stored on board ready for trials UK Quadrise Fuels International says that a batch of its Marine MSAR fuel was produced at the AB Orlen Lietuva refinery and shipped to Rotterdam. It was then put in a segregated bunker fuel tank on the Maersk-nominated vessel which is to carry out trials. The emulsion fuel is being developed as "a low cost alternative to heavy fuel oil in the shipping, refining and power generation markets".Quadrise says that Maersk will manage the programme to completion of the fuel evaluation report and that the switch to Marine MSAR from conventional fuel oil will happen when performance evaluation equipment is commissioned and specialists from Maersk, Quadrise and the engine manufacturer can join the vessel and monitor the initial operations, first hand. The report on the trials should be completed in the second quarter of 2012.Quadrise's chairman, Ian Williams, said: "The development of MSAR fuel continues to make solid progress, particularly for marine application, and we expect to continue to make significant strides forward in our managed project programmes in 2012. Somali Pirate Movie Starring Tom Hanks Gets A Release Date

On theaters on March 22nd, 2013 By the time Captain Richard Phillips was rescued from Somali pirates by Navy SEALs back in 2009, it was clear that they were totally going to make a movie about it. Sure enough, Columbia Pictures grabbed the movie rights the very next month. Since then, the project has signed on Tom Hanks to play the lead role of Phillips and Paul Greengrass to direct. It's taken a while, but now the project -- officially titled Captain Phillips -- has nailed down a release date. The Playlist reports that Captain Phillips will make port in theaters on March 22nd, 2013.Captain Richard Phillips and the crew of the Maersk Alabama were attacked by four Somali pirates intent on hijacking the vessel on April 8th, 2009. The crew fought back with flares and even the ship's rudder, but the pirates made it aboard anyway. The crew had smartly rerouted control of the ship away from the bridge and powered everything down, so the pirates couldn't control the ship, but they did capture Captain Phillips and several crew members. Chief Engineer Perry managed to capture the pirate leader and they attempted to exchange him for Phillips, but the pirates ...

Maersk and the U.S. Navy collaborate on biofuel initiative

Testing algae-based biofuel on the container ship Maersk Kalmar Norfolk, VA and Copenhagen, Denmark - Maersk and the U.S. Navy are testing algae-based biofuel on the container ship Maersk Kalmar. The ship is en route from Northern Europe to India.Maersk Kalmar has two key attributes that make it a suitable vessel for biofuel testing. The 300 meter-long container ship has a dedicated auxiliary test engine, which reduces the risks of testing, and its fuels system has a special biofuel blending equipment and separate tanks. In October 2010, Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus visited Maersk headquarters in Copenhagen, Denmark and learned of energy conservation initiatives across Maersk's fleet of over 1,300 vessels. These programs fit well with the Navy's interests in increasing fuel efficiency and reducing emissions. The biofuels test is the first collaboration between Maersk and the U.S. Navy's Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA)."The shipping industry needs to dramatically reduce greenhouse gas intensity in the coming decades. In the short term, we can gain a lot by focusing on improving fuel efficiency. In the longer term, we would like to see sustainable biofuels become a commercially available, low-carbon fuel," said Jacob Sterling, Head of Climate and Environment at Maersk Line.During ...

Economies of scale made steel

The economics of very big ships Aboard one of the world's largest container ships, moving almost imperceptibly through the seas off Vietnam, it's easy to appreciate the economies of scale that allow a T-shirt made in China to be sent to the Netherlands for just 2.5 cents. The Eleonora Maersk and the other seven ships in her class are among the biggest ever built: almost 400m long, or the length of four football pitches, and another half-pitch across. The ship can carry 7,500 or so 40-foot containers, each of which can hold 70,000 T-shirts. On the voyage your correspondent took, the Eleonora was carrying Europe's New Year celebrations: 1,850 tonnes of fireworks, including 30 tonnes of gunpowder. To move all this cargo from China to Europe in just over three weeks, the Eleonora boasts the largest internal-combustion engine ever built, as powerful as 1,000 family cars. This engine turns the longest propeller shaft (130m) ever made, at the end of which is the largest propeller, at 130 tonnes. Yet the ship is so automated that it requires a mere 13 people to crew it. Reassuringly, most captains prefer to take a few more.Maersk Lines, the world's biggest container-shipping company and owner of ...
