ClassNK - TEC 0881 / Life -Saving Appliance Code Amendments ClassNK issues Technical Information TEC-0881 regarding Summary of LSA Code amendments adopted by MSC at the 87th session as follows:Marine Safety Committee (MSC) has amended LSA Code by Res.MSC.293(87) at the 87th session.Revised points are mentioned as attached. Please refer to the attachment of Summary of Revised LSACode and RESOLUTION MSC.293(87).Revised point by Res.MSC.293(87):- Liferafts (an average mass of 82.5kg per person for a cargo ship and a passenger ship)The requirement will be applied for the liferafts installed for ships the keels of which are laid on or after 1 January 2012. At this time, the following flag states will treat the same application with ClassNK. Amendments to the International Life-Saving Appliance (LSA) Code

Hong Kong Merchant Information Note Marine Department of Hong Kong issued a Hong Kong Merchant Information Note regarding Amendments to the International Life-Saving Appliance (LSA) Code.The purpose of this Note is to advise the parties concerned of the amendment to the International Life-Saving Appliance (LSA) Code under MSC.293(87) which will enter into force on 1 January 2012.1. On 21 May 2010, the Maritime Safety Committee of the International Maritime Organization at its 87th session adopted the resolution MSC.293(87) to amend the LSA Code and the amendment will enter into force on 1 January 2012.2. The details of the amendment can be found on the website of Marine Department(http://www.mardep.gov.hk/en/msnote/msin.html) as an annex to this Note for easy reference. Guidelines for evaluation and replacement of lifeboat-retrieval systems

All non complying appliances will have to be replaced Shipowners are pushing for guidelines on additional safety measures for lifeboat-securing systems following an agreement on evaluating and replacing the old-design onload release hooks that have led to dozens of fatal accidents in safety drills.Last month, at thedesign and equipment meeting at the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) agreed guidelines for the evaluation and replacement of lifeboat-retrieval systems.It also agreed amendments to the Life-Saving Appliances (LSA) Code that will introduce extra safety arrangements to prevent the unintended release of lifeboats.Under the new regulation, all appliances not complying with the amended LSA Code will have to be replaced.
