During SMM, LR announced a co-operation project with Hyundai Heavy Industries, to explore the value of blockchain when applied to shipbuilding. Namely, LR launched its prototype blockchain-enabled Class register. This registers ships into Class using blockchain technology.

LR launched the "Sulphur 2020 – Options Evaluator" to assist the industry identify the best strategy for compliance with the global sulphur in fuel oil limit of 0.50% m/m, which comes into effect on 1 January 2020. An oil and gas decommissioning consortium was created, aiming to offer an end-to-end solution from industry leaders, in order to reduce the decommissioning burden, risk and cost for operators. The new global decommissioning consortium includes LR, WorleyParsons, and Ardent. This consortium includes experts covering all aspects of decommissioning.

LR approved the structure and the risk-assessment related to the installation of a rotor sail on the LNG-fuelled Viking Grace, in line with its Guidance Notes for Flettner Rotor Approval. The approvals aim to ensure that the rotor would not have a negative impact on the safe operation of the ship or the safety of the crew.

Member states at IMO MEPC 72 adopted the so-called GHG initial strategy, envisaging, for the first time, a reduction in total GHG emissions from global shipping by at least 50% by 2050 compared to 2008. Ms. Katharine Palmer, Environmental Manager at LR shared her views with respect to this historic agreement, explaining what the sector should expect for the day after.

GTT, Lloyd’s Register and Dalian Shipbuilding, started the second phase of the "30,000m³ B-FREE LNG carrier" Joint Development Project. The projects has set as a target the creation of a ballast-free medium-sized LNG carrier, which will comply with the new Ballast Water Management Convention.

Cosmo Co. Ltd has issued an updated Notice Letter and a Root Cause Analysis regarding the quality issue that has been discovered in many fire doors that they manufacture, including A-60, A-0 and B-15 class doors. Cosmo Co. Ltd  found that a number of delivered products had some insulation partly missing from the inside of the A-60, A-0 and B-15 class doors. 

Lloyd's Register Foundation and Blockchain Labs for Open Collaboration will set up Maritime Blockchain Labs, to explore the use of blockchain for the safety of infrastructure and drive new business models for the global maritime industry. MBL will try to establish an ecosystem within the sector to improve innovation and collaboration between blockchain practitioners.

South Korean Hyundai Mipo Dockyard has delivered to compatriot Ilshin Logistics the world’s first LNG-fueled bulk carrier under the dual-class of Lloyd’s Register and Korean Register. The 50,000 dwt bulk carrier has been verified to be in compliance with the IGF Code.
