Methanol engines of ME-LGI Concept successfully tested

Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding (MES) – the MAN Diesel & Turbo licensee – recently demonstrated the liquid-gas-injection concept successfully in Japan. The successful demonstration took place on 17 June, 2015 using the very first ME-LGI engine to ever be commercially produced. The engine, with the type designation 7S50ME-B9.3-LGI, is bound for a vessel currently under construction by Minaminippon Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. for Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. Ole Grøne, Senior Vice President – Low Speed Promotion & Sales – MAN Diesel & Turbo described the event as a significant milestone in the development of Diesel technology and said: “The immediate market acceptance of our ME-GI (Gas Injection) engine confirmed the growing demand for low-sulphur, non-HFO options in the face of increasingly stricter sulphur limits in fuel. In turn, extending our dual-fuel engine programme with an ME-LGI unit that can run on liquid fuels was therefore a natural step.” He continued: “The interest in our ME-LGI engine confirms this dual-fuel, lowspeed trend and will offer even more alternatives to HFO, which – apart from methanol – will include LPG, dimethyl ether (DME), and (bio-) ethanol, as well as several other, low-sulphur, low-flashpoint fuels.” Grøne concluded: “We welcome our partners’ interest in ...

LNG vessel delivered to Evergas

The first in a series of 27,500 cbm 'Dragon' class vessels ordered by Evergas is being delivered from the Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering (SOE) shipyard in China. The vessel features a comprehensive Wärtsilä solutions package, including two Wärtsilä 50DF dual-fuel engines, Wärtsilä propulsion equipment including the gearbox, two Wärtsilä 20DF auxiliary generating sets, a Wärtsilä LNG fuel system and a Wärtsilä cargo handling system. The various systems are fully integrated to achieve maximum efficiencies. The order with Wärtsilä was placed in the beginning of 2013. The 'Dragon' class ships are to be chartered by INEOS Europe for the transportation of ethane to Europe from the Mariner East project in the USA. The carriers are purpose built for the transportation of ethane, although they in addition can carry a wide range of petrochemical gases and LPG. Operational safety and efficiency, economic fuel consumption, and compliance with all applicable environmental regulations were the overriding considerations in the placing of the contract with Wärtsilä. The various individual Wärtsilä solutions are integrated to form a fully optimised package. Furthermore, by engineering and supplying the complete cargo plant, the gas fuel supply system and the propulsion plant enables Wärtsilä to achieve optimal energy consumption ...

LPG coaster shipping market to remain weak in 2015

The LPG coaster shipping market continues to be plagued by excess vessel supply with rates remaining stubbornly below pre-financial crisis levels, according to the latest edition of the LPG Forecaster, published by global shipping consultancy Drewry. “Average 12-month LPG coaster time charter rates fell almost 15% between 2007 and 2014”, said Shresth Sharma, senior analyst, gas shipping at Drewry.“And in the case of smaller vessel classes such as coasters a small change in rates can have a significant impact on operator profitability”, continued Sharma. The abundance of supply is the result of lower than expected petrochemical plant demand rather than any surge in new orders. Given that the pressurised vessel fleet has grown by just 2% over the last three years, the supply and demand imbalance can be almost exclusively explained by weak product demand reflecting the slowing global economy, and sluggish growth rates in the Eurozone and China in particular. (Source: Drewry's LPG Forecaster) (Source: Drewry's LPG Forecaster) Furthermore, smaller vessels have been largely unaffected by rising natural gas liquids (NGLs) production in the US given ship owners’ preference for larger vessels. Even to export LPG cargoes from the US to relatively close markets such as Europe, ship ...

HHI puts its fuel saving propeller attachment into service

Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), announced its fuel saving propeller attachment, Hi-FIN, proves beneficial to shipowners and operators. After a year-long trial of the energy-saving device installed on a 162,000 m3 LNG carrier ordered from Maran Gas, HHI found that Hi-FIN can save up to 2.5 % of fuel in comparison with the same type of vessels without Hi-FIN. If the fuel saving ratio is calculated on the basis of an 8,600 TEU containership, the owners or operators of the containership can save about $750,000 per year or $19 million for 25 years, an estimated lifetime of the ship. The energy-saving device attached at the hub of the propeller generates countering swirls that offset the swirls generated by the propeller, and thus improves propulsion efficiency. HHI has won orders of Hi-FIN for over 30 ships to date, and the company expects more orders now that it can install the device on broader types of ships from LNG carriers to almost all types of ships including VLCC, LPG carriers and containerships. BW LPG enters into contracts for four new building VLGCs

BW LPG Limited announced that it has entered into ship building contracts for four Very Large Gas Carrier (VLGC) newbuildings with Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME).  Previously reserved by DSME’s existing client, these vessels are to be delivered in the third and fourth quarters of 2016.   Speaking about these contracts, Nicholas Gleeson, CEO of BW LPG, said, “Whilst the exceptionally high rates of today are not likely to last forever, there are many years of anticipated growth in export volumes in this market, which elicits our desire to enhance our fleet and its capability. These contracts now provide us an opportunity to grow or renew our VLGC fleet in the coming years, without adding further to the new building fleet on order.” The delivered cost of these vessels, including interest and other costs, is likely to be approximately USD 290 million. The initial payments under the contracts are to be met from free cash and the revolving credit facility.  Andrew Hoare, CCO of BW LPG, further commented, “BW’s relationship with DSME has afforded this opportunity to us when it became available. We continuously strive to deliver the best LPG transportation solutions to our customers and our growing ...

Anthony Veder to introduce Innovation in short-sea LNG shipping

Anthony Veder’s 6,500 cbm LPG/LEG/LNG carrier Coral Anthelia has been retrofitted with a dual-fuel (DF) engine that enables it to run on boil-off gas when transporting LNG. Having successfully completed its sea trials, the vessel operates in the North Sea and Baltic Sea and regularly loads LNG at the Rotterdam Gate Terminal. “This great result was achieved by committed partners working effectively together in a trusting and safe way. Not only was this project completed ahead of time and within budget, it was also executed without any safety incidents. This breakthrough innovation in the use of LNG for short sea shipping shows that retrofitting a tanker to run on LNG is both technically and financially viable”, says Anthony Veder CEO Jan Valkier. The vessel was delivered to Anthony Veder in 2013 with a conventional six-cylinder MaK M43C diesel engine. With the vessel’s design already optimised for ethylene trading, a new target was set: consumption of the boil-off gas as fuel when carrying LNG and without completely replacing the one-and-a-half year old engine. The solution was found by retrofitting the engine to make it a MaK M46 dual-fuel engine. This was achieved making use of a dedicated package that recently ...
