Interferry examines Philippines to produce safety lessons learned

A four-man team from global trade association Interferry will be in Manila from March 18-22, to conduct the first stage of a project to study significant safety improvements in Philippines ferry operations. The team will also produce a 'lessons learned' report to help other developing nations. The FerrySafe project team will be carrying out one-hour meetings with various stakeholders to learn how fatal incidents have been reduced to almost zero in recent years.

North Club: Attention needed for quay contacts in Port of Kingston, Jamaica

According to the North P&I Club, recent years have seen several incidents in the Port of Kingston in Jamaica where vessels have made contact with a particular quay on the entrance to the port’s basin. These contact incidents have caused damage to the port, to the vessel and on sometimes pollution. On each case, the appropriateness of the speed of approach of the ship into the turning basin was questionable.

USCG addresses rules for safe parasailing

The US Office of Navigation Systems released Marine Safety Information Bulletin 002-19, 'Parasailing - Navigation Rules and Flight Safety,' to address operations of vessels pulling parasail wings and to promote the safety of passengers aloft in the vicinity of aircraft. Parasailing is an 'activity in which an individual is transported or carried aloft by a parachute, sail, or other material attached to a towline which is towed by a vessel.'

Updated standard released for pipeline systems integrity

The American Petroleum Institute released the third edition of API Recommended Practice 1160 (RP 1160), 'Managing System Integrity for Hazardous Liquid Pipelines,' on February 27. RP 1160 provides a process for ensuring safe pipeline operations, including robust assessments of potential risks and establishment of systems to safely and efficiently manage them during day-to-day operations.
