Maritime Administrations are responsible of making sure that companies offering a GMDSS Shore-Based Maintenance (SBM) service are acceptable according to the IMO Resolution A.702 (17). If a ship owner has chosen the radio equipment to be maintained through a Shore-Based Maintenance Agreement, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) has agreed with a series of requirements that must be met by a company that seeks registration as a SBM provider. 

Martin Øhre, Maritime Trainee at Skuld Club, touches upon the matter of enclosed space entry. Mr. Øhre notes that failure to comply with company procedures regarding entry into enclosed spaces can be fatal, while hazards such as oxygen depletion or carbon monoxide exposure are among the most common causes.

Transport Malta published its report regarding a serious injury to crew member on board the cargo ship 'Adam Asnyk', on 15 February 2018. The crew member sustained multiple fractures to his leg, arm and pelvis, as during cleaning the cargo with a hose, he lost his balance as he tried to free the snagged hose. The locking pin that would have locked the railing and prevent it from lifting upwards was never in place from the design stage of the ship.

The Shipowners Club said it has encountered eight damage to property claims allegedly caused by the snagging of fishing gear on subsea cables over the last two years. The quantum of such claims is invariably high, sometimes reaching into millions of dollars.

Wärtsilä conducted its fifth annual global Safety Day on March 14th, 2019. This year theme was Lifesavers, referring to Wärtsilä's 10 life-saving rules. This Safety day aimed to enhance life-saving rules and called people to act when they see a case that is inconsistent with the ten rules. The life-saving rules apply to all workers and partners involved with Wärtsilä's operations or visiting its premises.

In 2017, there were an estimated 219 million cases of malaria in 90 countries” and deaths caused by malaria reached 435,000, according to data provided by WHO. Meanwhile, UK P&I Club said it has recently been informed of two deaths and two cases of serious illness due to malaria. 

The US Inspections and Compliance Directorate published the Marine Safety Alert 02-19, 'Not all navigation lights are created equal,' to help all mariners understand the difference between navigation lights used on power driven vessels and those used on sailing vessels. The vertical divergence requirements for lights on vessels under sail are larger to accommodate greater heeling.

CHIRP published its Maritime Feedback 54, which is its first bulletin of 2019. The bulletin includes reports on lifting operations, proactive port authority, AIS and ECDIS offsets, heat and fatigue, and safety briefings. Regarding lifting operations a report describes an operation in which several areas presented a high potential for an accident to occur.
