CHIRP issued its 54th Maritime Feedback outlining an incident concerning a combination of ladder deficiency and the follow up which involved both the port authority and the regulatory authority, Port State Control. This report demonstrates that when a vessel turns up ill equipped, this regulator is prepared to take immediate action.

CHIRP issued its 54th Maritime Feedback, focusing on several reports outlining the anomalies between a vessel’s AIS and ECDIS, and positions obtained from a PPU or by visual/radar position fixing. The incident results to the fact that incorrect AIS offsets at the installation stage can also cause a great deal of confusion and may require a visit from a technician to access the pass code. 

Building better training simulators for sailors on surface ships is a key initiative that the US Navy is carrying out. This comes as the Navy implements recommendations following the deadly USS John S. McCain and USS Fitzgerald collisions, according to Adm. William Moran, vice chief of naval operations. Mr. Moran also stated his disappointment about the simulators that were used by the surface force, in comparison to what he was used to as a naval aviator.

ABS is cooperating with CINS members over the past six months to develop best stowage strategy guidelines. After a three-month trial, the best practice guidelines will be published. The collaboration gathers key industry stakeholders to examine the challenges and risks container ship owners and operators face when stowing dangerous goods.

Despite the fact that marijuana has become at least partially legal in 35 US states, the US Coast Guard says that dangerous drug use disrupts or destroys the careers of hundreds of professional mariners. This threatens safety throughout the maritime transportation system at the same time. Mariners must avoid using marijuana or any products derived from marijuana that may contain THC, such as CBD oil, USCG highlighted.

West of England Club highlights the importance of safely securing cargo, in order to avoid any incidents. The Club continues to receive claims in respect of cargo shifting due to inadequate securing where roll trailers have been used. This can either be inadequate securing of the load to the trailer or inadequate securing of the trailer to the vessel, or a combination of both.

Maritime Administrations are responsible of making sure that companies offering a GMDSS Shore-Based Maintenance (SBM) service are acceptable according to the IMO Resolution A.702 (17). If a ship owner has chosen the radio equipment to be maintained through a Shore-Based Maintenance Agreement, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) has agreed with a series of requirements that must be met by a company that seeks registration as a SBM provider.
