Cargo theft is a global challenge with a major negative impact on supply chains and the world’s economy. To put this into context, cargo crime has costed an estimated US$22.6 billion in 2015, while the top five natural disasters costed a collective $33 billion, research has indicated.
Cargo ships carrying liquid cargo is a special category type of ships in respect of firefighting because on board such ships there is a dangerous combination between cargo’s specific features and equipment to support all aspects of vessel’s requirements.
Engine room fires are often very challenging to deal with, due to the construction of the room and a plentiful supply of the fire triangle elements: heat, fuel and oxygen. A major engine room fire can have destructive consequences and, in the aftermath, it’s unlikely for a ship to continue under her own power.
An electrical power failure onboard not only jeopardizes vessel’s safe operations but also may be linked to electrical hazards, putting at risk crew lives, especially electricians’ who are responsible to handle these systems onboard, and also personnel attempting electrical power connections during shipbuilding, ship repair or ship breaking.
No matter where an accident occurs, the rescue of persons in distress at sea will be co-coordinated by a SAR organization and assist ships in distress, not only because of international treaties such as SOLAS and SAR Convention of 1979, but also due to moral obligation.
Although, it sounds difficult to happen, the danger of somebody fall off of the ship – while working on deck – is hidden almost in any procedure taking place on vessel’s open space area.
Good housekeeping is essential to a safe workplace onboard a vessel and housekeeping oversights rarely go unnoticed during port state control or vetting inspections, ISM audits and condition surveys. In view of this, the American Club listed general vessel housekeeping observations which could affect vessel safety.
