USTDA supports study on Panama Canal LNG terminal

The U.S. Trade and Development Agency awarded a grant to the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) to support the planning of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal.  When the Panama Canal expansion project is completed next year, the Canal is expected to handle significant LNG tanker traffic.  In order to capitalize on this growth, the ACP is interested in developing LNG-related infrastructure projects, including an import terminal. “The U.S. Government is very pleased to partner with the Panama Canal Authority through this USTDA grant as the ACP looks to develop a LNG import terminal in the coming years to take advantage of the Canal expansion project,” said Chargé d’Affaires Kevin M. O’Reilly, who signed the grant agreement along with ACP Administrator/CEO Jorge L. Quijano. "As we near the completion of the Panama Canal Expansion, we are eager to explore new segments such as LNG, which are now possible given our enhanced capacity to accommodate longer and wider ships. This grant by the USTDA will build on plans and projects related to LNG that are already ongoing and will present us with the ability to evaluate additional market opportunities and client services for the benefit of the U.S.-Panama energy trade," ...

BMT secures contract for Africa’s first LNG import terminal

BMT Asia Pacific (BMT),  has been appointed by Endeavour Energy for the development of the LNG storage and regasification facility, a part of the Ghana 1000 Gas to Power Project and Africa’s first LNG import terminal. Endeavour is co-leading development with General Electric, Eranove and local partners Sage Petroleum with the aim of providing the Ghanian government with Sub Saharan Africa’s largest power park, providing more than 1000MW to the national grid once completed. Excelerate Energy is providing assistance in siting the floating LNG terminal infrastructure, engineering and providing the dedicated floating LNG regasification vessel - FSRU (Floating Storage Regasification Unit) to supply gas to the power plant, an integrated gas to power solution that is expected to lower the costs of electricity and provide additional gas for other consumers. Through its LNG industry experts and marine engineers, BMT will be working closely with Endeavour and Excelerate Energy in conducting FEED level studies which include operability assessments, infrastructure design and optimization studies for the supply of gas from the offshore moored FSRU via subsea infrastructure to the onshore gas turbines at Aboadze, Ghana.  In March 2015, Shell and the Ghana 1000 consortium entered into exclusive SPA negotiations regarding a long-term ...

The industry needs structural regimes for LNG operation

DNV GL took part in the industry conference ”LNG – Full speed ahead“, hosted by Hamburg’s trade authority and a number of German and Dutch LNG organizations and platforms. The conference aimed at strengthening relationships between the Dutch and the German Maritime LNG Platform and discussing the opportunities and challenges both countries face in developing LNG as a fuel for shipping. The Dutch Royal couple, the Dutch Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation as well as the Parliamentary State Secretary at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy and Hamburg’s Senator for Economic affairs were among the 150 people, who attended the event in Hamburg’s historic fish auction hall. “LNG has great potential. And we know from LNG operations on gas tankers that it is extremely safe to use, both in ships and in bunkering facilities”, said Alfred Hartmann, President of the German Shipowners Association. But what the industry needed, was a level playing field, he added. “At the moment there are still several challenges, one of them is that authorities need to establish a legal framework and structural regimes for LNG operation,” said Jan Tellkamp, Principal Consultant Project Management at DNV GL, at the panel discussion ...

Port of Rotterdam gets new multi-user LNG break bulk facility

Gate terminal announced the ceremonial start of the construction activities for the new LNG break bulk infrastructure at its site at the Maasvlakte in Rotterdam. The Port of Rotterdam has begun with the excavation of a new harbour basin next to Gate terminal. The new facility is expected to boost the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a cleaner and affordable transportation fuel in the Netherlands and Northwest Europe.  Break bulk (or small-scale) services aim to split up large-scale LNG shipments into smaller parcels. This enables the distribution and use of LNG as a cleaner fuel alternative for maritime vessels, ferries, trucks and industrial applications. Since 2011 Gate terminal enables overseas LNG import into Europe. Gate terminal contributes to diversifying the European gas supply by providing access to LNG from around the world. At Gate terminal, LNG is received, stored, reloaded or regasified for the Northwest European gas grid. These activities have formed the basis for the current development of small-scale services. To mark the start of the development of LNG break bulk infrastructure and services Gate terminal has organized a ground breaking event on 31 March. Chief Executives representing players from across the complete LNG and logistics ...

How shipping companies may decide on marine fuels

Latest bcg.perspectives by The Boston Consulting Group include an analysis on how the shipowner  may decide which marine fuel option will provide the highest return in the coming years and how they will comply with the increasingly stringent rules and regulations imposed by regulators. According to the analysis, shipping companies need to decide when to invest in switching to liquefied natural gas or other environmentally friendlier fuel options. Uncertainty about the effective date of a global cap on sulfur emissions has added to the complexity. The choice among fuel options is not clear-cut, as each one has benefits and drawbacks. To help shipping companies navigate through the challenging investment decisions, BCG has developed a proprietary tool that evaluates the business case for each fuel option over the next 15 years. If their investments to comply with emissions regulations are well designed and executed, companies can expect a net positive return. The answers to a set of strategic questions can help companies identify which option is the best fit: Do you know the business case for investments in each fuel option for your fleet, as segmented by vessel type, vessel size, and route? What percentage of your fleet operates exclusively ...
