GTT receives order from DSME for six new LNGCs

GTT announced an order for six LNGCs (Liquefied Natural Gas Carriers) which will be built by the South Korean shipbuilder DSME (Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering). These six LNGCs, for a European owner, are expected to be delivered between 2018 and 2019. They will be built with the innovative NO96-GW technology which allows an optimized boil-off rate of cargo LNG. Sovcomflot and RS cooperate to bring new vessels to Russia’s fleet

Sovcomflot (SCF Group) and Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) have both taken steps to make the Russian fleet more competitive. In 2014, 10 SCF Group vessels were transferred to the RS class, meaning that it is now responsible for the survey of 40 Sovcomflot ships in total. These include the very latest Atlanticmax LNG carriers, multi-purpose icebreaking supply vessels, crude oil tankers, chemical carriers and tugs. In order to satisfy the increasing requirements of large-scale oil & gas projects on Russia’s continental shelf, Sovcomflot plans to expand its fleet of specialised and technically advanced vessels operating under the flag of the Russian Federation, whilst continuing to develop mutually-beneficial partnerships with Russian Maritime Register of Shipping. At present, SCF’s entire shipbuilding programme is being carried out with the participation of RS. SCF Group and RS are currently working together on several shipbuilding projects which are technically complex, in light of the difficulty of operating vessels at extremely low temperatures and in regions with challenging climatic conditions. Company switches DFDE to MEGI propulsion

The Norwegian company FLEX LNG announced that they have reached an agreement with Samsung Heavy Industries to convert  the propulsion system for two LNG carriers from DFDE to the fuel efficient 2-stroke slow speed MEGI main engines.  The consequence of the change is an increase in the yard price of the vessels taking into account the change in specification, including the deployment of the new engine system and exhaust gas treatment for compliance with new emissions regulations, 0.09% Boil-off Rate to maintain speed flexibility, and ballast water treatment system. The price increase is to be paid by FLEX on delivery. The expected delivery dates of the vessels have been postponed from Q1 2017 to Q1 and Q2 2018. With the support of major shareholders and Samsung Heavy Industries, FLEX is laying the foundation for building an attractive position in the LNG shipping market with the newest generation of LNG carriers. New LNG carrier Papua delivered to serve PNG LNG project

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. announced the delivery of the LNG carrier Papua by Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding on January 30. The Papua is the first in a series of four ships to be built by Hudong to provide LNG transportation for the PNG LNG project in Papua New Guinea and the Gorgon Jansz LNG project in Australia. MOL will operate the Papua under a long-term charter contract for the PNG LNG project operated by ExxonMobil. In January 2011, MOL assigned technical experts to the shipyard in China and created a shipbuilding supervision team made up of multinational staff, mostly Chinese and Japanese, to ensure the safe and high-quality construction of these LNG carriers. Since then, the company has been actively involved in the project to build these LNG carriers in China – a first for an overseas shipping company – in cooperation with ExxonMobil. The ship was named Papua by the First Lady of Papua New Guinea, Mrs. Lynda Babao O'Neill, in the naming ceremony which was held at Hudong shipyard on January 8. ABB to provide propulsion systems for four LNG carriers

ABB announced that it will deliver advanced electrical propulsion systems for four LNG carriers under construction by Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding. The LNG vessels are a joint venture between China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), China LNG Shipping (Holdings) Limited (CLNG) and Teekay, and will operate under 20-year time-charter contracts with Methane Services Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of BG. LNG carriers are highly sophisticated in terms of technology and are specially designed to transport LNG at a low temperature of minus 162 degrees Celsius. They are regarded as the “super freezer cars of the sea” and “the pearl on the crown” in the world shipbuilding industry. According to a research report released by Clarkson Research Services Limited in the UK, an authoritative consultancy in the global shipbuilding industry, more than 80 LNG carriers will be needed annually in the world by 2022. Under the contract, ABB will provide the vessels with medium voltage generators, medium voltage switchboards, propulsion drives, propulsion transformers, propulsion motors and propulsion control systems, together with the installation and commissioning of the equipment and training. NYK and Mitsui conclude time-charter contract for 2nd LNG carrier

On January 29, NYK concluded a time-charter contract with Mitsui & Co. Ltd. for a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier for the Cameron LNG project based in the U.S. state of Louisiana. Mitsui & Co. Ltd. will take LNG produced from this project which promote in the U.S. state of Louisiana and this is second new contract, following the contract concluding with Mitsui & Co. Ltd. on September 26, 2014. The ship will be delivered in 2018 and assigned to transport this project’s LNG for a maximum of 25 years. The new vessel will be owned by Rosewood Shipping Pte. MHI receives order for 2 next-generation LNG carriers from Mitsui

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has received an order for two next-generation LNG (liquefied natural gas) carriers from Mitsui & Co., Ltd. The carriers on order feature a design that achieves significant improvements in both LNG carrying capacity and fuel performance through the adoption of a more efficient hull structure and an innovative hybrid propulsion system. The vessels are scheduled for completion and delivery in 2018 and 2019, respectively. They will be put into service for the Cameron LNG Project1 under way in the United States, an initiative in which Mitsui is participating. The event marks the first order placed to MHI for LNG carriers to transport shale gas. The order for the two LNG carriers was received through MI LNG Company, Limited, a joint venture between MHI and Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. The vessels will be constructed at MHI's Nagasaki Shipyard & Machinery Works. Specifications will be LOA (length overall) of 297.5m, width of 48.94m, depth of 27.0m and draft of 11.5m. Four new LNG carriers to feature Wartsila’s gas handling systems

A series of four LNG carriers being built by the Hudong-Zhongua Shipbuilding yard in China will feature Wärtsilä LNG reliquefaction plants and gas handling systems. The ships are owned by Bermuda based Teekay Corporation, China LNG Shipping (CLNG), CNOOC Energy Technology Co of China, and BW Gas of Norway. The contracts with Wärtsilä were issued by Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding and were signed during the fourth quarter. The award of these contracts is a significant breakthrough into the Chinese market for Wärtsilä LNG reliquefaction plants and gas handling systems for LNG carriers, while at the same time emphasising the company’s position as the market leader in supplying these solutions. The Wärtsilä solutions will provide the owners with both economic and technical benefits. The reliquefaction plant will reliquefy 70% of the boil-off gas from the ships’ LNG cargo and return it to the cargo tanks, while the balance is fed by the gas handling system to the engines for propulsion purposes. The system is pre-fabricated in skid modules for easy onboard installation and hook-up.
