The ship-recycling sector poses serious threats to people and the environment, as well. The sector has high levels of fatalities, injuries and work-related illnesses wich occur mainly from hazardous materials onboard.
The parties that participate decided this initiative as ship recycling standards and transparency are insufficient. This causes bad practices which are not punished, and good practices that are not rewarded. Shipbreaking is often carried out with few safety controls, increasing the risk to health and safety.
Accidents can happen at the best of recycling facilities, LR says. But lessons are learned when procedures aren’t followed at well-organised facilities. Individuals, or companies, are held accountable for not following documented working practices and existing processes are then further improved. However, the most basic health and safety requirements are still not being followed at the majority of the world’s shipbreaking yards.
