Lithuania's LNG import terminal, 'Independence', is expected to double its LNG volumes after the opening of gas pipelines to Poland and Finland, 2021. The pipeline opening will turn the Baltic Port into a regional hub. 'Independence' mostly imported Norwegian LNG for domestic use, using a fifth and a third of its annual capacity of 2.7 million tonnes of LNG, after changing in 2017, along with its first US cargo import.

In the first 11 months of 2018, all Baltic ports received and shipped 144.78 million tons of cargo, which surpassed the same period in 2017 by 5.6% or 7.665 million tons according to the Lithuanian Statistical Bureau. From the whole cargo-handling, 41.8% was reloaded in Latvia, 35.3% in Lithuania and 22.9% in Estonia.

The European Commission has approved the compensation granted by Lithuania to LITGAS for supplying a mandatory quantity of LNG to the LNG terminal in Klaipėda. The Klaipeda seaport will contribute to the EU's Energy Union goals to reduce energy import dependency.

Large-scale projects have been initiated in the Southern part of Klaipeda Seaport. These projects will lead to an improvement of ecological footprint. In addition, the projects on capital dredging works and dredging of soil from dock pits in Malku Bay will be launched soon.

The DFDS Seaways’ ferry Regina Seaways, with more than 300 passengers onboard was reported to be stranded in the Baltic Sea, as it experienced fire in the engine room, while it was off the coast of Kaliningrad. However, according to the Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence the ferry reached the port of Klaipeda.

The Governmental Commission on the Economic Infrastructure Development of Lithuania approved current decisions regarding the acquisition of an LNG storage vessel in 2024. Lithuania believes that the ship can ensure competitive gas prices and the lowest LNG infrastructure maintenance cost in the short and the long term.

The Port of Oslo announced a new environmentally friendly line at the port. Namely, the shipping companies Viasea and Containerships has started a new weekly route from Klaipeda in Lithuania via Gdynia in Poland to Oslo. The first departure from Klaipeda will take place on 5th April 2018.
