On the occasion of this year’s World Mental Health Day, SAFETY4SEA is pleased to announce the launch of ‘SEAFiT’, a new service that aims to ensure that mental health & well-being becomes a global priority for all maritime stakeholders.

As the topic of mental health is becoming increasingly relevant in the business sector and every aspect of life, with current data showing that at least one in eight people globally is affected by mental health issues, the global community is rejoining its forces on World Mental Health Day to “Make Mental Health & Well-Being for All a Global Priority”.

NeurodiversAtSea, a seafarers’ neurodiversity charity, announced the launch of its first annual Neurodiversity Benchmark Survey. The survey aims to gather data in support of a maritime neurodiversity strategy.

Commander Graham Hockley, Chairman of the Maritime Charities Group (MCG) highlights that with regards to EDI issues (Equality, Diversity, Inclusive), the maritime industry is lagging behind. In this context, a new mindset is needed; industry stakeholders should not regard EDI as another box-ticking exercise while robust strategies and policies will assist in ensuring equal opportunities for all.

In the 2021 Australian Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (MLC) annual report, AMSA presents an analysis of MLC complaints, compliance and follow-up actions undertaken by AMSA in Australia for 2021.

From 29-31 August, the first face-to-face meeting of the Nordplus research project took place in Tallinn, Estonia. “Dealing with anxiety during a pandemic to improve adult well-being” was the theme of the meeting.

The COVID-19 pandemic redefined the industry’s approach to mental health with unconfirmed reports indicating an increase in the number of seafarers’ suicides. However, with the lack of a central database system for reporting suicides at sea, the potential problem cannot be framed and, consequently, addressed.
