Liberia Re-Elected to IMO Council After 14 Years

IMO Council It has been nearly 15 years since Liberia lost her seat on the Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). That all ended on Friday, November 25, 2011, when 107 of the 155 certified voting Member States of the IMO, voted Liberia back on to the Council (the IMO comprises 170 Member States). This marks a historic milestone in the Country's drive to take its rightful place in the International Maritime Community.The Council is the Executive Organ of IMO and is responsible, under the Assembly, for supervising the work of the Organization. Between sessions of the Assembly, the Council performs all the functions of the Assembly, except the function of making recommendations to Governments on Maritime Safety and Pollution Prevention which is reserved for the Assembly by Article 15(j) of the Convention.Other functions of the Council are to: (a) Co-ordinate the activities of the organs of the Organization; (b) consider the draft work program and budget estimates of the Organization and submit them to the Assembly; (c) receive reports and proposals of the Committees and other organs and submit them to the Assembly and Member States, with comments and recommendations as appropriate; (d) appoint the Secretary-General, subject to ...

Mitropoulos at IMO Headquarters (on Wednesday, 15 June).In welcoming the Minister and his delegation, which included His Excellency Mr. Wesley M. Liberia appoints Indian registry as recognised organisation

India is a global economic power which generates increasing demand for shipping, Classification Society the Indian Registry of Shipping (IRS) has been appointed as a Recognised Organisation by the Liberian Registry to act on behalf of vessels operating under the flag of Liberia.Scott Bergeron, Chief Operating Officer of the Liberian International Ship & Corporate Registry (LISCR), the US-based managers of the Liberian Registry, described India as a "very important market" for the Registry."India is a global economic power which generates increasing demand for shipping," he said. Liberian Registry joins QUALSHIP programme for 2011/2012

Ships are recognised and rewarded for their commitment to safety and quality The Liberian Registry has been admitted to the United States Coast Guards (USCG) QUALSHIP programme for 2011/2012.The QUALSHIP (Quality Shipping for the 21st Century) programme is a quality incentive programme to which only a small percentage of foreign-flag ships calling at US ports are admitted, based on the excellence of their port state control record.It was developed to provide an incentive for well-run, quality ships and ship operators. Designated ships are recognised and rewarded by the USCG for their commitment to safety and quality.Scott Bergeron, COO of the Liberian International Ship & Corporate Registry (LISCR), the US-based manager of the Liberian Registry, says, This recognition of Liberias commitment to quality shipping is all the more significant because it comes at a time of major expansion for the registry. Interim IMO Guidance on the use of privately contracted armed security personnel

On board Ships in the high risk area The Republic of Liberia issued Maritime Security Advisory 03/2011 for interim IMO Guidance.The International Maritime Organizations Maritime Safety Committee approved interim guidance on the employment of privately contracted armed security personnel (PCASP) on board ships transiting the high-risk piracy area off the coast of Somalia and in the Gulf of Aden and the wider Indian Ocean at its 89th session in May 2011.The IMO interim guidance is largely based on guidance on the use of armed security guard services developed by the Liberian Registry for its shipowners, ship operators, and shipmasters.
