As ILO informs, the participation of more women in leadership roles is a major field of the global fight to equality. Besides, there are still indicators ringing the bell for the global community to shed its efforts for enabling more women in core business positions.

IMO is providing support to eight female officials from developing countries to attend a Port Senior Management Programme which took place from 6 to 19 November at the Galilee International Management Institute (GIMI) in Nahalal, Israel. The event in particular was delivered through IMO's gender and capacity-building programme, together with GIMI, as part of IMO's efforts to support the UN Sustainable Development Goal 5 to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.

As the shipping industry is striving to improve safety, major representatives from the sector agreed to the industry’s Golden Safety Rules, along with other ideas as well regarding how these measures can be applied. This is part of the ‘Together in Safety’ initiative, which aims to achieve a zero-incident industry, and the agreement took place during the Global Maritime Forum 2019 in Singapore.

On the occasion of Global Maritime Forum 2019 underway in Singapore, maritime leaders reiterated their common ambition to make the maritime industry safer, agreeing the industry Golden Safety Rules and ideas on how they could be implemented and used, as part of the ‘Together in Safety’ initiative.

Leadership is one of the most critical components to overall effectiveness, either the effectiveness regards the safety of a ship at sea or the overall efficiency of a company on shore. But what exactly is leadership and what makes a proper leader? And which leadership model is effective when it comes to today’s complex environment?

During LISW 2019, Dr. Grahaeme Henderson, Vice President, Shipping & Maritime at Shell International Trading and Shipping Company Ltd, highlighted how important is for the industry to continue its efforts on seafarers’ mental health and wellbeing and shared examples of Shell’s work towards a zero-incident future.

A persistence in tradition still seems to be holding the shipping industry away from being more inclusive and diversified and brings women of the 21st century still confronted with superstitions and misconceptions around their potential work at sea.

In an exclusive interview with SAFETY4SEA at Nor-Shipping, Mr. Nawfal Al Jourani, Director of Dubai Maritime Cluster Office at DMCA, shared Dubai’s priorities as a major maritime hub of the Middle East. Mr. Jourani noted that innovation is the cornerstone of Dubai’s strategy to be attractive to the shipping community. 

As part of its efforts to encourage more women in the maritime sector, the IMO supported a training course aimed at female officials from maritime and port authorities. A total of 25 women from 17 developing countries took part in the two-week "Women in Port Management" course, hosted in Le Havre.
