Kongsberg Digital launched a new digital twin, after a successful feasibility study with Equinor. The new twin is a virtual model of unmanned production facilities for oil and gas and it allows users onshore to explore planned or existing assets offshore. The digital twin can also improve design quality and processes.

The world's first autonomous and electric container vessel is one step closer to launch, as YARA signed a deal with VARD worth NOK 250 million to build the vessel. VARD will deliver Yara Birkeland for launch in early 2020, and the vessel will gradually move from manned operation to fully autonomous by 2022.

Rolls-Royce signed an agreement to sell its Commercial Marine business, to Kongsberg, for £500m and net proceeds of around £350m to £400m. The sale includes propulsion, deck machinery, automation and control, a service network spanning more than 30 countries and ship design capability. Rolls-Royce’s Ship Intelligence activities, including remote and autonomous operation of commercial vessels, are also included.

A new Norwegian collaboration, including the Institute of Marine Research, shipowner Torvald Klaveness, Kongsberg and the Norwegian Shipowners’ Association, seeks to develop a pilot project with the aim of mapping marine plastic and other environmental parameters vital to the health of the oceans.

Kongsberg Norcontrol signed an agreement with the Norwegian Coastal Administration for delivery, operations and maintenance of radars to the maritime traffic service. The agreement has a potential total value of up to NOK 250 million and a duration of up to eleven years. The agreement enables the technical extension of the maritime traffic service area's service areas in the following years,

Norwegian companies Wilhelmsen and Kongsberg are cooperating and have created an autonomous shipping joint venture, called "Massterly". The new company will offer services for autonomous ships, including design and development, control systems, logistics services and vessel operations. The new company will start operations from August 2018.

A new custom-built multi-purpose dynamic simulator will be created, to serve the Mad Dog Phase 2 project in the Gulf of Mexico. The new system wants to provide a realistic simulation environment. The simulator is expected to be delivered at least one year before first oil, in order to give time to train the operators.

Kongsberg Digital launched a 3D virtual application for its K-Sim Cargo simulator. The system generates visualization for operational training on important areas of the cargo deck, enabling training centres to deliver safer cargo transfer operations. The 3D virtual model is based on a customized simulation model of a VLCC, M/T “Kiho”.

The unmanned RALamander fireboat aims to keep marine firefighting professionals out of harm’s way. Fires involving containers, petrochemicals, shore-side structures or vessels can be dealt with more quickly in situations where toxic smoke or explosion risk may obstruct manned vessels from responding effectively. 

Simwave B.V. and Kongsberg Digital have completed the Site Acceptance Test of one of the largest maritime simulation suites ever delivered. This means that the new Simwave Maritime Center of Excellence in Barendrecht, Rotterdam is now fully operational.
