Given that there is more acceptance towards automation, he says, the regulatory challenges for autonomous ships need to be addressed.
The world’s first autonomous and electric container vessel is one step closer to launch, as YARA signed a deal with VARD worth NOK 250 million to build the vessel. VARD will deliver Yara Birkeland for launch in early 2020, and the vessel will gradually move from manned operation to fully autonomous by 2022.
Kongsberg Norcontrol signed an agreement with the Norwegian Coastal Administration for delivery, operations and maintenance of radars to the maritime traffic service. The agreement has a potential total value of up to NOK 250 million and a duration of up to eleven years. The agreement enables the technical extension of the maritime traffic service area’s service areas in the following years,
Norwegian companies Wilhelmsen and Kongsberg are cooperating and have created an autonomous shipping joint venture, called “Massterly”. The new company will offer services for autonomous ships, including design and development, control systems, logistics services and vessel operations. The new company will start operations from August 2018.
