A minimum under keel clearance is one of the major factors required to provide safe passage for a vessel as it helps mariners avoid ship grounding.

A ceremony was conducted in celebration of the keel laying of Rauma Marine Constructions’ newbuilding, NB6002 for Wasaline, on Thursday February 13 at the Rauma shipyard. The new ferry will be the first ever RoPax ferry with a Clean Design class notation. The vessel will have a hybrid power generation system, as well as an electric propulsion system rarely used in car and passenger ferries. 

The US Office of Commercial Vessel Compliance published 'Determinations for a Vessel’s Keel Laid Date or Similar Stage of Construction.' The work instruction was updated on September 20, 2019. This work instruction aims to establish the interpretations of when a vessel’s keel is considered to be laid or the vessel is at a similar stage of construction.

The US Coast Guard shared work instruction concerning determinations for a Vessel’s Keel Laid Date, providing guidelines for Officers in Charge, Marine Inspection (OCMIs) to determine what may be accepted for the purpose of establishing a vessel’s keel laid date.

The Philly Shipyard, Inc. has held a ceremonial Keel Laying for the fourth APT tanker in a four vessel order for for Kinder Morgan. When completed, the product tanker celebrated will be 600 feet long and capable of carrying 50,000 tons of crude oil or refined petroleum products.

General Dynamics NASSCO hosted a keel laying ceremony for the Palmetto State, the eighth ship in an eight-ship ECO Class tanker program for two separate customers, on September 23.

 A keel laying ceremony was held Monday at Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. for the first of six ships in the project 42К Arctic Shuttle Tanker series.All six ships of the series will be named after the famous Russian explorers of the Arctic, including participants to the Great Northern Expedition of the 18-th century. The ships are being built to the dual RS/LR class. SCF Group is the shipowner of three tankers of the series.All tankers of the series are intended for operation in high latitudes at temperatures up to – 45 °С under conditions of year-round navigation. They are designed with due regard to all applicable RS requirements, international regulations and standards. The ships will provide crude oil transportation from the Gulf of Ob area. Completion of construction and delivery of the prototype ship to a customer is scheduled for late June 2016.
