Japan is positioning itself as a potential hub in Asia for LNG refueling. International Transport Forum at the OECD issued a report assessing the factors that will influence the realisation of this ambition, that would make Japan one of the key places in Asia where LNG-fueled or co-fueled ships would be able to take onboard LNG.

The European Commission presented trade agreements with Japan and Singapore to the Council to eventually be adopted. The European shipowners welcomed this move, noting that this was the first step towards the conclusion of these agreements, which "send a strong message to the world in support of fair and regulated trade".

The start of operations of the world’s newest container shipping line, ONE, will be tested by its capability to harness synergies from the formerly-three liners it’s made up of, said online freight forwarder iContainers. By working together as a combined entity, ONE should take this opportunity to adopting the best practices of each member.

The Japanese container ship business, Ocean Network Express, has officially launched its first container ship at Imabari Shipbuilding in Japan. The 14,000 TEU vessel 'ONE Minato' is scheduled for delivery in December 2018. ONE announced the official commencement of its container shipping businesses on 1 April 2018. 

Ocean Network Express Pte. Ltd. officially commenced container shipping businesses on 1 April 2018. ONE is the result of an integration of the container operations of three Japanese shipping carriers, K Line, MOL, and NYK. The new joint-venture seeks to respond to the imbalance of supply and demand in the container shipping industry.

Hoping to make Tokyo Bay a gateway to Asia for ships sailing in the Pacific Ocean, into a LNG bunkering hub, Uyeno Transtech, Sumitomo Corporation, and Yokohama-Kawasaki International Port Corporation will jointly study the commercial feasibility of Ship-To-Ship LNG bunkering services using LNG bunkering vessels.

The ferry Ferry Fukuoka II with some 600 passengers onboard  had a collision with a buoy that marks shallows, southwest of Akashi, Honshu, Inner Japan sea, on March 18, while it was heading to Shimoji from Osaka. The ferry collided with the buoy while it was trying to prevent collision with passing ship.

The Japan Coast Guard has recommended negligent homicide charges for the USS Fitzgerald’s officer of the deck and the ACX Crystal’s second officer, following the fatal collision on 17 June 2017, about 60 miles southwest off Yokosuka, which caused death of seven sailors.

As Sri Lanka Ports Authority Chairman Dr. Parakrama Dissanayake said, a Memorandum of Understanding between Sri Lanka, Japan and India on a LNG terminal and Floating Storage Regasification Unit will be signed  next week and the feasibility study will begin soon. 

A new situational awareness system has been launched, aiming to reduce the risks of navigation during night, in bad weather on congested waterways. To do this, the system uses sensors with intelligent software. The new system, will collect data, in order to ensure safe navigation.
