Jamaica benefits from Maritime Public Leaders Programme in Singapore

Organised by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore Jamaica was among several countries represented at the inaugural Maritime Public Leaders Programme (MPLP) held in Singapore recently.Organised by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, 17 senior maritime personnel from countries across Asia, Africa and the Caribbean participated in the programme. The programme was held at the Nanyang Technological University's (NTU) Maritime Studies and Infrastructure Systems Divisions, School of Civil and Environmental Engineering.Representing Jamaica, Claudia Grant, deputy director general of the Maritime Authority of Jamaica, said the course proved very useful to senior maritime personnel, as it covered a broad range of issues which impact the maritime industry including commercial operations and their impact on the regulatory framework and new trends such as greening of shipping, pollution prevention and the International Maritime Organisation Voluntary Member State Audit Scheme.Singaporean approach"Most important were the areas on governance where participants were introduced to the Singaporean approach to leadership and governance, which were integral to their national development strategy," Grant said.She added, "In light of Jamaica's pending audit under the VIMSAS, discussions on this area were fruitful, relevant and timely and have served to provide additional perspectives on strategies for implementation and preparation for ...
