In an effort to accelerate the adoption of hybrid alternative propulsion methods, blending wind, alternative fuels and energy efficiency measures, International Windship Association launched a campaign.

The American Bureau of Shipping just entered the non-profit organisation, International Windship Association (IWSA) in an effort to boost wind propulsion solutions for commercial shipping.

Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha Ltd., or “K” LINE recently joined the International Windship Association (IWSA) in order to further develop direct wind propulsion in commercial shipping.

A large number of wind propulsion projects are under development and increasingly coming to market, said Gavin Allwright, Secretary General of IWSA in his opening address at the International Wind Propulsion for Shipping forum.

In line with an increased shift to environmentally-friendly solutions as a pathway to decarbonization, ClassNK announced it is joining the International Windship Association (IWSA), which is working to promote wind as a viable propulsion option for commercial vessels.

Bureau Veritas is the new member of the International Windship Association (IWSA) to assist in the development of various renewable solutions. BV's addition is expected to boost IWSA's development with the establishment of regional wind propulsion ‘centres of excellence’ or ‘hubs’ around the world.

French maritime company Louis Dreyfus Armateurs (LDA) Group is the latest member of the IWSA. As the firm commented 'The need to reduce fuel costs and future proof vessels in preparation for decarbonization costs is growing and the embrace of technology solutions that can deliver double digit savings for retrofit installations and significantly higher savings for optimised new builds makes a lot of sense.'

Referring to key priorities for a robust, resilient and sustainable maritime sector, Mr. Gavin Allwright, Secretary General, IWSA, highlights the need for an integrated approach that will ensure up-stream and down-stream impacts are always assessed in a transparent and collaborative way and emissions aren’t shifted, offset or dumped into other sectors.

IWSA has been nominated in the ‘Initiative’ category for its pioneering projects which can deliver 5-20% and with potential up to 30% savings, picking up speed on the road to decarbonization. As explained, key industry stakeholders are planning to test and install wind propulsion systems.

Lately the shipping industry has reached a wide consensus that it must decarbonize the sector. Especially ahead of the 2020 sulphur cap, the industry is trying to improve its environmental footprint. In this attempt, several companies are considering wind propulsion technology solutions.
