Salvini urges Germany to handle migrant boat heading for Italy

Matteo Salvini on Thursday, March 28, urged Berlin to take responsibility for 64 migrants rescued in the Mediterranean by a German charity boat and heading toward the Italian coast in rough seas, Reuters reports. New arrivals to Italy have plummeted since Salvini took office in June, with just 532 migrants coming so far this year, down 92% on the same period in 2018 and down 98% on 2017.

Italy supports China’s ‘Belt and Road’ initiative

Italy joined China's 'Belt and Road' initiative on March 23, and became the first major Western power to support this initiative, in an attempt to help revive the Italian economy which faces troubles. The agreement was signed during a trip of the Chinese President Xi Jinping to Italy. Leveraging this occasion, Italian companies signed agreements with Chine firms, amounting a total of 2.5 billion euros ($2.8 billion).

MSC under negotiations for Italy’s largest container terminal

Swiss Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) is interested in buying a share in Medcenter Container Terminal from Italian terminal operator Contship Italia.  Both parties have been negotiating for the transaction of Contship Italia’s 50% shares in CSM Italia Gate, the company that controls MCT, which is the concessionaire of the container terminal activities in the port of Gioia Tauro where MSC is already a partner and the customer.
