In April 2021, a fire onboard the Italian passenger ferry ‘Moby Prince’, Italy’s worst merchant marine disaster since the end of World War II, broke out. The incident, resulting in death of all but one person onboard, highlighted how miscommunication in emergency situations can be disastrous. 

Matteo Salvini on Thursday, March 28, urged Berlin to take responsibility for 64 migrants rescued in the Mediterranean by a German charity boat and heading toward the Italian coast in rough seas, Reuters reports. New arrivals to Italy have plummeted since Salvini took office in June, with just 532 migrants coming so far this year, down 92% on the same period in 2018 and down 98% on 2017.

Contship Italia and Itaterminaux S.à.r.l., a fully controlled subsidiary of Terminal Investment Ltd (TIL), have executed a share purchase agreement concerning the sale of 50% of CSM Italia Gate, the company which owns 100% of MCT - Medcenter Container Terminal S.p.A.

Italy joined China's 'Belt and Road' initiative on March 23, and became the first major Western power to support this initiative, in an attempt to help revive the Italian economy which faces troubles. The agreement was signed during a trip of the Chinese President Xi Jinping to Italy. Leveraging this occasion, Italian companies signed agreements with Chine firms, amounting a total of 2.5 billion euros ($2.8 billion).

Italia Port of Trieste signed an agreement with China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) that will enable Italian products from small and medium companies to access Chinese markets as well as facilitate infrastructure development in central Europe.

Swiss Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) is interested in buying a share in Medcenter Container Terminal from Italian terminal operator Contship Italia.  Both parties have been negotiating for the transaction of Contship Italia’s 50% shares in CSM Italia Gate, the company that controls MCT, which is the concessionaire of the container terminal activities in the port of Gioia Tauro where MSC is already a partner and the customer.

Italy is currently negotiating a preliminary agreement to participate in China's 'Belt and Road Initiative' plan to boost trade. As the Junior Industry Minister Michele Geraci informed, if Italy manages to sign an agreement with China later this month on this issue, it would just be an initial framework, without a binding character.

Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri announced it has reached a cooperation agreement with Genova Industrie Navali (GIN), to acquire a minority stake in GIN Group’s holding company and an option for a minority stake in T. Mariotti.

A crane collapsed on February 5, at an offshore platform in the Aegean, which led to one killed platform worker and two injured seafarers, as reported by the Italian oil major Eni. The accident took place on the Barbara F platform, located 30 nautical miles off the coast of Ancona, Italy.

As Guardia Costiera posted, its crewmembers began removing fuel from the Turkish cargo vessel called 'Efe Murat' off Bari, Italy. Up to now, there have been no reports concerning pollution. Yet, it is alleged that the vessel has been holed in several places and is taking on water.
