As 2019 comes to an end, the time has come for an annual review concerning smart shipping. This year, the shipping industry continued facing and taking part in major technological developments, providing maritime stakeholders with opportunities to explore new opportunities in the smart era in the field of autonomous vessels, connectivity onboard and cyber security, spreading the digitalization message across the whole industry.

ISO issues first set of global standards for drones

As part of the increased use of drones worldwide, the ISO has published a draft version of the first ever set of standards for drone operations to apply globally, in a bid to make drone operations safer and more efficient. The rules are expected to be adopted worldwide in 2019 and to this end, ISO has invited professionals, academics and businesses to submit comments by 21 January.

FAL Committee standardises data for effective electronic business

IMO’s FAL Committee approved a revised structure for its Compendium on Facilitation and Electronic Business, including a new standard IMO reference data set, which will be used as basis for automated and digital systems for exchange of information when ships arrive at and depart from ports.

Indian Register of Shipping receives ISO 27001 certification

The classification society, Indian Register of Shipping informed that it has secured ISO/IEC 27001 certification for its Information Security Management System from the British Standards Institution. The ISO 27001 standard requires the management to examine its organisation’s information security risks, vulnerabilities and impacts, implement a set of information security controls to address risks that is considered unacceptable.
