The Paris MoU has published its 2019 Annual PSC Report, revealing a decrease in detention percentage to 2.94% (from 3.17%). The number of detainable deficiencies has decreased again to 2,995 from 3,250 in 2018. ISM was the main detainable deficiency area in 2019.  

During the 2020 SAFETY4SEA London Forum, Capt. Mark Bull, Principal, Trafalgar Navigation Limited, questioned if the ISM Code is failing, after more than 20 years since its implementation. Capt. Bull firstly provided a brief history of the ISM Code, as well as a description of the five main areas where he felt the Code has failed and went on to explain how such potential failures affect the crew. Since it was introduced; however, nobody has reviewed the Code to ensure its ongoing effectiveness, he concluded.

CHIRP issued its 54th Maritime Feedback, focusing on several reports outlining the anomalies between a vessel’s AIS and ECDIS, and positions obtained from a PPU or by visual/radar position fixing. The incident results to the fact that incorrect AIS offsets at the installation stage can also cause a great deal of confusion and may require a visit from a technician to access the pass code. 

Christopher J. Wiernicki, ABS Chairman, President and CEO, discussed the importance of the US to keep on shaping the future of global maritime energy, safety and sustainability. He highlighted that IMO's challenges for 2030 and 2050 are pushing the industry to new solutions around fuel and operations that are not only environmentally responsible, but also commercially viable, technically feasible and safe.
