A group of international shipowners’ associations met in Hong Kong on 14th May to consider the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally-Sound Recycling of Ships, 2009. The Global Shipowners’ Meeting reaffirmed its commitment to the Hong Kong Convention and the need for environmentally sustainable ship recycling.

Intertanko created a new procedure for port-states' response whenever a tanker’s BWMS is not operating correctly, and is about to submit this new procedure to IMO. Namely, it concluded to 9 contingency measures. These include, amongst others, fixing the BWMS at the ballast loading port, fixing the system while heading to the port, conducting a ballast water exchange while in ocean, or retain ballast water onboard.

The guidance highlights the use of the Maritime Security Transit Corridor, the registration with MSCHOA and reporting to UKMTO, as well as reviewing and updating risk assessments and plans to include new threats.

Leading environmental organisations and global shipping industry players have called for an explicit prohibition on the carriage of non-compliant marine fuels when the 2020 sulphur cap takes effect. In a joint statement, they assert that a carriage ban will help ensure robust, simplified and consistent enforcement of the global sulphur cap.

The International Chamber of Shipping, BIMCO, INTERCARGO and INTERTANKO represented the global shipping industry throughout this week's intensive discussions at the IMO, which continued the development of a comprehensive CO2 reduction strategy for the international shipping sector.

In latest ship security advisory, the Republic of the Marshall Islands draws the operators' attention to effective restrictions on armed security in Nigeria which is becoming an issue for the country's navy, according to information provided by INTERTANKO. The Association highlights that according to Nigeria's new requirements, no  armed guards, including the Nigerian Navy guards, are no longer allowed on board merchant vessels

International shipowner organizations have submitted to IMO a new paper to further elaborate their views on IMO's strategy regarding GHG reduction which is expected for adoption at MEPC72. The submission provides concrete wording on the level of ambition and the accompanying guiding principles.

The LISW event kicked off with a round-up of the latest BWM updates during INTERANKO's seminar in which Tim Wilkins, Environment Director, provided a summary of how the entry into force of IMO’s landmark convention will impact the tanker industry.

Following many incidents due to anchor machinery failures, OCIMF and INTERTANKO recommend measures in an effort to enhance anchor windlass safety. Stellar Voyager incident involving crew injury is a typical example of these failures. UK MAIB report has found that the most likely cause of this failure was over-pressurisation of the system due to the reversal of the hydraulic motor as the chain rendered.

Four major international trade associations, BIMCO, INTERCARGO, International Chamber of Shipping and INTERTANKO, have made a joint proposal to IMO, concerning ambitious CO2 reductions by the international shipping sector, which is responsible for transporting about 90% of global trade and 2.2% of the world’s annual man-made CO2 emissions.
