Intertanko proposes new ballast water contingency measures

Intertanko created a new procedure for port-states' response whenever a tanker’s BWMS is not operating correctly, and is about to submit this new procedure to IMO. Namely, it concluded to 9 contingency measures. These include, amongst others, fixing the BWMS at the ballast loading port, fixing the system while heading to the port, conducting a ballast water exchange while in ocean, or retain ballast water onboard.

Nigerian Navy excludes armed guards on board

In latest ship security advisory, the Republic of the Marshall Islands draws the operators' attention to effective restrictions on armed security in Nigeria which is becoming an issue for the country's navy, according to information provided by INTERTANKO. The Association highlights that according to Nigeria's new requirements, no  armed guards, including the Nigerian Navy guards, are no longer allowed on board merchant vessels

How to prevent failures due to anchor windlass machinery

Following many incidents due to anchor machinery failures, OCIMF and INTERTANKO recommend measures in an effort to enhance anchor windlass safety. Stellar Voyager incident involving crew injury is a typical example of these failures. UK MAIB report has found that the most likely cause of this failure was over-pressurisation of the system due to the reversal of the hydraulic motor as the chain rendered.
