BIMCO and Intertanko have jointly published Q&As addressing the contractual implications owners and charterers consider when chartering ships fitted with scrubbers. The Q&As highlight the key charter party clauses and concepts which should be analyzed for both time and voyage charter parties.

As the Britannia P&I Club informs, Intertanko has recently received a number of reports from its members regarding uncharted terminals in Chinese ports after a request for feedback. The association has called the Chinese authorities to mitigate the issue. Hydrographic inaccuracies and the non-marking of existing terminals on charts raise serious navigational risks.

Intertanko launched new guidance on Mooring System Management Plans and Line Management Plans. The guidance is developed to assist operators ensure compliance with MEG4 and address the questions in Vessel Inspection Questionnaire. With this guide, Intertanko also aims to help operators manage the relevant equipment and lines from design to retirement.

Intertanko has published the 'Guide to New Zealand’s biofouling and ballast water requirements'. In this it offers guidance to Members on New Zealand’s biofouling and ballast water requirements for commercial vessels. If the ship cannot prove that it complies with the standard, it may be subject to a dive inspection in New Zealand. Non-compliant vessels will be directed to either manage the biosecurity risk or to leave New Zealand.

18 companies from the cruise and commercial shipping industry have created the Clean Shipping Alliance 2020 to promote the use of scrubbers to comply with the IMO 0.5% global sulphur cap in 2020. CSA 2020 aims to inform the industry, relevant authorities, organizations and the public about the environmental benefits of scrubbers.

In a newly-launched Sea Asia industry insights report, '2020 Sulphur Cap: Is the industry ready for the long-run?', industry experts outline that despite the different solutions available for the industry to comply with the 2020 sulphur cap, there is still no consensus from the industry on which works best for the long-run.

After recent reports about fuel contamination at the Port of Houston initially, and then in Panama and Singapore, Intertanko blamed maritime authorities that they have not taken enough action to tackle this problem, which has caused issues to many ships. As a result, Intertanko fears that this will become a global epidemic.

International shipping industry organisations have launched a new website to provide maritime security guidance to companies and mariners. The new website www.maritimeglobalsecurity.org provides security guidance, which the industry supplies, as well as links to  useful maritime and military security resources. 

BIMCO, ICS, INTERCARGO, INTERTANKO and WSC, called the IMO to advance on challenges regarding the global sulphur cap, to avoid risking safety or unfairly penalise individual ships. The trade associations have submitted a number of proposals to IMO, aiming to help smooth the implementation of the global 0.5% sulphur.
