The Norwegian Government informed that it wants Norwegian satellites to make broadband communications available in the Arctic. This aims to help shipping, defence, fisheries or research in the area. Norway will pledge to Space Norway AS about NOK 1 billion in equity capital for the project.

Seafarers can be on vessels for months at a time, while at home the world keeps turning without them. Spending such long periods away from loved ones can lead to isolation, loneliness and depression.

The Norwegian companies Kongsberg Seatex and Radionor have teamed up to develop Maritime Broadband Radio. Norway is the first nation in the world to implement maritime broadband communication on ships and aircrafts in public service, which enable exchange of information, limiting damage when accidents occur.

Laura Grant, UK P&I Club, commented on the increasing reliance on technology within shipping, as the years have progressed. Among its positive effects within the shipping world is that it has allowed crews to stay in contact with loved ones while on long journeys, but sometimes it may go wrong.

Nautilus International issued a report, presenting findings on its "Connectivity at Sea" survey. The results show that despite 88% of the interviewed seafarers have internet access at sea, those who do often have limited access at high cost.
