As vessels become more and more autonomous, consideration has to be given to the human element of future vessel operations, according to David Patraiko FNI, Director of Projects at The Nautical Institute.

Hyundai Merchant Marine announced that it has successfully completed its first blockchain technology adopted pilot voyage. The voyage was conducted by a blockchain consortium, from Korea to China, with reefer containers from August 24 to September 4.  

Inmarsat announced the signing of a MoU with Samsung Heavy Industries, aiming to leverage the ‘smart ship’ connectivity offered by Fleet Xpress at the vessel construction stage. The ‘Smart Ship’ service aims to allow owners to harvest data from hull-monitors and equipment sensors onboard in real-time.

At Nor-Shipping 2017, NYK and DNV GL presented the first results of an ongoing maritime data center pilot project. The data center collects operational data from NYK vessels on DNV GL’s recently launched Veracity industry data platform, for monitoring vessel performance and condition-based maintenance schemes.

NYK announced that it entered a strategic partnership with Dualog, with the immediate focus on pushing the boundaries for automation, the Internet of Things and for Big Data analysis. The partnership is expected to leverage the technology focus and the growing cooperation between the Japanese and Norwegian maritime industries.

Drew Brandy, Senior Vice President Market Strategy, Inmarsat Maritime, gave a presentation on ‘’Embracing a new world of smarter connected shipping” during the 2017 SMART4SEA Conference & Awards. He noted that as maritime communication is going through a revolution, the possibility of a truly connected ship and seamless real-time integration with shore-based operations is no longer just concept, but a reality.

Radio Holland has announced that it signed a strategical agreement with American ICT company Cisco. The aim of the cooperation is to play a key role in accelerating digitization in the maritime sector by developing and offering maritime ICT solutions, for example remote monitoring & diagnostics services, data management and networks on board.

Ulf Siwe, Communications Officer of the STM Validation Project, Swedish Maritime Administration suggests to support industry initiatives that aim to ‘containerise information’ which means that instead of requesting information in different shapes, weight and packaging, let the industry define the information containers.

A new study conducted by Allianz has the cyber threat is considered as a major concern globally for businesses. Also, market developments and volatility is an important business peril in 2017 and the top concern in the aviation/defense, financial services, marine and shipping and transportation sectors, as well as across the Africa & Middle East region in general.

The Danish Maritime Authority recently said that in 2017 it will contribute to a pilot project on the development and testing of a system that collects all the sensor-generated information and continuously transmits them to shore in real-time.
