INTERCARGO published its Bulk Carrier Casualty Report 2019, which includes an analysis of casualty statistics covering the timeframe between 2010 to 2019.
INTERCARGO has applauded the recent announcement by the IMO’s Secretary General of his determination to improve the number of accident investigation reports that are submitted to the IMO. Exactly one year ago, INTERCARGO reminded that cargo liquefaction continued to be a major risk for dry bulk shipping.
Five days after the Indonesian-flagged bulk carrier ‘Nur Allya’ disappeared off eastern Indonesia along with its 25 crew, Intercargo, the International Association of Dry Cargo Shipowners, urged all shipowners, operators and seafarers to exercise extreme caution when accepting for carriage nickel ore and other cargoes that have the potential to liquefy.
Intercargo published its Bulk Carrier Casualty Report for 2018. Intercargo calls all stakeholders to remain vigilant as cargo liquefaction continues to pose a major threat to the life of seafarers. The report focuses on bulk carrier casualties from 2009 to 2018 and provides an analysis on statistics and trends over the last 10 years.
The last days of March have been ones of black anniversaries for shipping: On 24 March, the industry commemorated the Exxon Valdez incident. On 31st March, shipping mourns a relatively recent tragedy: The loss of the South Korean VLOC ‘Stellar Daisy’ in 2017, which took almost entire crew at the bottom of the South Atlantic.
In its Executive and Technical Committee meetings in Hong Kong on 4 and 5 March 2019, INTERCARGO highlighted the importance of investigating incidents and the subsequent publication of casualty investigation reports in a timely manner, in order for lessons to be learned.
Following the investigation report of the 2012 built supramax bulk carrier M/V CHESHIRE which was issued by the Isle of Man Ship Registry, INTERCARGO urges IMO to reconsider how Ammonium Nitrate Based Fertilizer should be designated in the IMSBC Code. Currently, the Ammonium Nitrate Based Fertilizer is listed as a group C cargo, however, the accident showed that this cargo, or at least some of the ammonium nitrate based fertilizers shipped as this cargo, should treated differently under the IMSBC Code.
Between 2008-2017 there have been 53 total losses of bulk carriers of 10,000 tonne deadweight and above, with the reported loss of 202 seafarers, according to the Bulk Carrier Casualty Report 2017 by INTERCARGO. The report highlights that cargo failure is one of the greatest concerns for the safe carriage of dry bulk and is likely the cause of the loss of 101 seafarers’ lives and 9 vessel losses in the last ten years.
INTERCARGO issued its Bulk Carrier Casualty report, covering and analyzing bulk carrier casualties from 2008 to 2017. The report revealed that 53 bulk carriers over 10,000 dwt have been identified as total losses over the years 2008 to 2017, with cargo shift and liquefaction remaining a great concern for seamen’s safety.
