As Gard informs, the mandatory notification requirement for the carriage of nickel ore loaded in Philippines and Indonesia still applies. This loss prevention initiative was launched in 2012 and allows for early interaction with ship operators and an opportunity to reduce the risks arising by this cargo.

In its weekly report for 21-27 May, ReCAAP ISC reported two armed robberies against ships in Asia. One of them is CAT 4, which means the perpetrators were not armed, and the crew not harmed, but the other one was a CAT 2, which means a moderately significant incident, with crew held hostage. Both incidents occurred in Indonesia. 

Indonesia sank 51 foreign fishing vessels as part of the government's attempts to tackle illegal fishing. The seized ships were sunk on May 4, of which 38 were Vietnamese, 6 Malaysian, 2 Chinese, 1 Filipino, and the rest were foreign-owned ships flying the Indonesian flag. Speaking about the occasion, Susi Pudjiastuti, the fisheries minister, noted that illegal fishing ships are threatening the local fishing industry.

A video widely shared on social media reportedly shows a Vietnamese coast guard ship hitting an Indonesian navy ship Monday, after the navy intercepted a boat it says was fishing illegally in its waters. Indonesian authorities detained 12 Vietnamese fishermen from the vessel.

The Maritime Administration of the Republic of Marshall Islands issued a marine notice concerning vessels sailing in Indonesian waters and intend to anchor in these areas. Also, vessels should operate at Security Level 2, maintain strict anti-piracy watch and measures, and report all security incidents and suspicious sightings to the local authorities and the IMB PRC. 

On Moday, April 22, two ferries collided when voyaging in Sunda strait. The collision was between ferry 'Windu Karsa Dwitya' and  ferry 'Virgo 18'. From the incident, a crew fell overboard and is missing, one passenger was injured and transferred to hospital, on arrival to Merak.

Two dock workers were killed, after the crane of the general cargo ship 'Bistari 8' collapsed during cargo operations at Pontianak, Western Kalimantan, Indonesia, on 4 April. According to local sources, the crane reportedly collapsed after trying to lift too heavy weight.

Indonesia has plans to upgrade the Port of Batam with a 1.2 trillion rupiah (S$115 million) financing from state port operator Pelindo I. This decision comes after Malaysia's aspiration to develop a multi-million-dollar project off Johor's Port. The plan for the Port of Batam aims to improve cargo handling, in order to enhance its competitiveness.

While speaking at the last SAFETY4SEA Conference in Cyprus, Mr. Dimitris Maniatis, Chief Commercial Officer, Diaplous Maritime Services, provided a recap of the current maritime security status, focusing on key high risk areas, such as the Indian Ocean region and West African waters. For the Gulf of Guinea, he stressed, Piracy and Maritime Aggression is never ending.
